“I was just at the right place at the right time.” That’s what singer/ songwriter Sonya Barrett had to say about the release of her debut EP “Shut”.
After winning a songwriting contest in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Barrett was awarded with a free EP recording by Auggy Reed Recording, a local studio in the area. “Signing up for the competition was a last- minute decision…but I can’t tell you how much winning has changed my life.”
Growing up performing in church and around small hometown Bristow, Oklahoma, Barrett says her sound is cultivated from her roots. “I grew up listening to classic country artists like Don Williams and Dolly…I never really knew anything outside of that until I started taking music seriously.”
Her freshman year in high school, Sonya joined The Famous Blue band—a youth band at her church. “I learned so much about how to use my voice to inspire others,” says Barrett. “That’s really when I learned this is what I was meant to do. I haven’t looked back since.”
With the release of “Shut”, Barrett hopes to use her talent to bring something to listeners. “The songs on the EP are close to my heart—they’re my struggles and the words are what I used to get through them. I hope those words can help someone in the way they’ve helped me. That’s what the whole project is about.”
