Details:
‘The Probability of Beauty’ was composed in 2007 for five pianos, the piece consists of ten short fragments of music that are played simultaneously at the beginning, and then goes through a process of each fragment being played with every other until all combinations have been heard. Everything is played together one more time before going through a process of eliminating each one.
‘Which Ever Way Your Nose Bends’ was composed in 1989 as a commission for the six piano ensemble ‘Piano Circus’. The notes of the diatonic scale are divided one note to each of the six pianos and the seventh note is shared by all. It was written to accompany a performance of Steve Reich’s ‘Six Pianos’ and I intended it to feel like the antithesis to that high energy work.
‘Still Beginning, Never Ending’ also for six pianos was composed in 1995. The first and third parts are strict canons and the slow central movement has a more elegiac improvisatory feel.
