Rebekah was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario. By the age of four she became interested in singing, and she would sing along with all her favorite songs of the 80s and 90s. An era where electronic music began, and evolved. She wrote her very first song when she was eight years old, took a very deserved break, and then started writing again when she was seventeen. Throughout her youth she studied music and learned to play the clarinet, which became a valuable stepping-stone for all her future endeavors. After high school she decided to pick up the guitar, and learned to play keys, and started developing her songwriting talent. Rebekah went to open mics around the city, to present her new songs to different crowds, while meeting other inspiring musicians, who would later play with her, and help her expand on her talents.
Through attending these open mics. Rebekah was able to meet the people involved in some of her first recordings. These recordings led her to meet Los Angeles-based producer Greg Hampton who has worked on Bootsy Collins and Buckethead’s projects. Through exchanging ideas via telephone and email, a new project evolved. Rebekah Star’s debut EP titled “Alien Nation” 2008 is a unique mix of electro, rock, funk and pop, and is seductively kick-ass. The songs include the Blondie-esque “Electro Soul,” and heavy funk “Alien Nation.” “A friend of mine used the words ‘electro-soul’ to describe my music about two years ago. I decided to write a song called ‘Electro Soul’.
Alien Nation was a starting point for Rebekah, and it gave her the foundation she needed to start playing shows, and further her potential. This project allowed her to explore her abilities as a songwriter, and as a recording and performing artist, while enabling her to work with quality producers who understood what she was trying to do, and who were able to coach her through. “I had a great time working with top of the line songwriters, musicians, and producers, from the studio to playing shows. I had so many questions, so much to learn, and I wanted it all at once, so this album was a really good way for me to understand my direction.”
Rebekah Star is currently recording new music for her next album, planning shows for Spring 2011, as well as preparing to make a music video. “I’m working on my next album with Che Dubois, which is coming out in Spring 2011. I’m excited about this project, it’s got a pop/electro vibe, and we’re making the songs dj friendly so they can be played by any dj worldwide, and on any radio station. I’m planning some live shows in the near future. There are good times ahead.”
What will the new album be called?
“It’s called Sonic, and it will definitely send you on a journey to sonic places. I think I’m still riding the wave.”
