Details:
A dreamy ballad style Medieval tale of an Ice Castle, a Dragon and a King. Co written with Sarah Curtis and inspired by Winter Carnival 2011 in Saranac Lake, NY USA. Featured on String Fever with Barb Heller, and with Todd Moe on North Country Public Radio 2011. The song slowly and dreamily moves through an instrumental intro to the first verse. Sarah and Howie sing the same melody for two verses then break into harmony for the chorus. One of the hallmarks of this tune is the strategically placed interval of a ninth at the end of the last line in verse two and the chorus, which adds to the dreamlike quality. Constant throughout is the bodhran''s beat as the instruments provide support for the melody. Weaving in and out, like a bird flitting through the castle, the flute sometimes rehearses the melody, but more dances on her own. Occasional tambourine and chimes add splashes of color as the story line travels from the dragon''s ascent, to the entrance of the King and finally the dragon being cast "into the depths of Lake Flower".
The dreamy quality of the lyrics continue with the last line repeated: "Let my soul cross over and sleep ... cross over and sleep ... and sleep" followed by a long instrumental fade into dreamland.
