With their debut CD, Worms Songs, The Earthtones are beginning to make their mark on Toronto’s jazz scene. Drawing on everything from Otis Redding to Charles Mingus to Astor Piazzolla to Flatt & Scruggs, the nine tracks on Worm Songs include eight originals by saxophonist Mark Laver, along with a cover of the bluegrass anthem, “How Mountain Girls Can Love.” The surprising harmonic twists and turns and the off-kilter rhythms reflect Laver’s many years playing with some of Toronto’s leading avant-garde jazz groups (Muskox, See Through Trio, Arkana), but the catchy melodies, irreverent lyrics, and danceable grooves that keep the music fresh and fun. The Earthtones features some of the finest musicians in Ontario: Alex Samaras (voice), Carrie Wiebe (voice), Jason Logue (trumpet), Laver (saxophones and harmonica), Michael Smith (banjo and mandolin), Ali Berkok (piano), Jay Burr (tuba), and Dave MacDougall (drums). Formed in 2007, the band plays regularly around Toronto, including frequent performances at The Rex, The Tranzac, Supermarket, and The Trane Studio.
