Six Mile Grove yields the energy of American rock and the simplicity of classic country music, delivered with pure farm boy charm.
With roots generations deep in the cornfields of southern Minnesota, the band Six Mile Grove continues to flourish like a well tended crop. Six Mile Grove was founded in 1997 in Lyle, MN (population 500) by brothers Brandon and Brian Sampson, Barry Nelson and Dezi Wallace. SMG has celebrated 5 albums and 11 years of playing together. Their forthcoming album “Steel Mule,” reflects upon “coming of age” themes: marriage, parenthood, family, and mortality. As with their earlier albums, “Steel Mule” continues to cultivate homage to the humble life of small town farmers and their families, and the inevitable effects of progress, as children grow up and move away to find their own destinies. Singer/Songwriter Brandon Sampson shares “This album is about growing up and becoming a man. The songs talk about how you can make a mark on this world through your family. When you look at your son, you see your legacy. The only way to become immortal is to let those seeds spread.”
Six Mile Grove has spent the last 3 years digging into the art of storytelling and songwriting with membership in the Americana Music Association, and participation in the annual Americana Music Conference in Nashville, TN. “In Americana, the emphasis is on the integrity of the music and the story, with lots of freedom in the sound,” says Sampson. “That has always been our focus, and now we have an organization that represents the kind of music we listen to, and create.” Soon after attending their first AMA conference, SMG began hosting “Americana Showcases” in their original stomping grounds in southeastern Minnesota. The format brings musicians from across the state and country into smaller communities that aren’t usually on the “national tour map” of larger musical acts. Guests have included local MN artists Gary Louris of the Jayhawks, and Martin Zellar of the Gear Daddies in addition to artists traveling from as far as Nashville, TN and New York, NY. Six Mile Grove also continues to tour the Midwest with (Johnny Cash) music legend Bob Wootton, and was recently spotlighted for an upcoming episode of “ABC’s Extreme Makeover Home Edition,” which re-built a house in nearby Albert Lea, MN.
Previous albums include “Bumper Crop (2004),” which continues to chart and receive airplay on Americana and Country radio stations in the US and Europe. It is preceded by “Friction (2000),” recorded and produced by Lou Whitney at The Studio in Springfield, MO, “Long Distance Everything (1998),” recorded at Oar Fin Records in Minneapolis, MN, and “A Day’s Work (1997) also recorded with Lou Whitney at The Studio.
Six Mile Grove performs regularly in their home soil of the Midwest, in addition to tours that have brought them as far as The Lion’s Den in the heart of Greenwich Village, NY, to the South Park Music Festival in Fairplay, CO. They have shared the stage with The Kentucky Headhunters, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Slobberbone, The Gear Daddies and Charlie Robison. Jeff Hanna of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band said “Recently the Dirt Band had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Six Mile Grove. They really knocked us out.
