The Ginge ("short for ginger") is a talented blend musicians performing a no-frills organic brand of rustic guitar rock, power pop, with blue-eyed soul and R&B undercurrents. It’s first album, Continental Anyone? is an album in the classic sense taking the listener on a ride down the proverbial road of life. The image is not new, but the Ginge’s take on the highway is interesting, intelligent and occasionally scary.
In its first song “Know About Me, How Bout You”, the Ginge identifies itself and daringly questions the audience whether it has enough ‘ginge’ to go on this ride. It is as if the band is pitching up a hitchhiker and wants to make sure the trip is going be a good one for both. After paying homage to its Chicago roots with “Blue Tuesday,” the band dedicates its next songs to losing relationships (“I’m Gone,” “Kick You Out the Door”) to finding one (“You and I”). After finally getting its relationships solidified, the band hits its stride with the power-pop anthem (“Light it Up”); a song about leaving those relationships and pursuing its dream of a touring rock band. The band looks to its future and explores what is and what is not important in the slightly alt-country (“Be Here for a While”). After a bit of worry (“Careful”), the band concludes with its dangerous and jangly guitar stomp “Road Rage.”
The album is an album in the truest sense. Continental Anyone? Yeah, I will go for a ride.
