Details:
Lee aBe''s composition for SATB vocal ensemble, with text by renowned Japanese poet Misuzu Kaneko (1903-1930). She lived a tragically short life. All the vocal parts are sung by Junko Kamei and Lee aBe, with piano accompaniment also by the composer.

A well-established vocal jazz arranger and the bass singer of vocal group Syncopation, Lee aBe has recorded and published multiple works throughout the world. Yet “Watashi To Kotori To Suzu To” adds a new dimension to aBe''s compositional journey. For the first time in his professional career he has written a musical setting for a poem written by a distinguished Japanese poet.

Literally translated as “Me, A Little Bird and A Bell,” the poem is about a little girl who thinks about the differences between humans, birds and bells - all can make music but all have other attributes that are quite different. As the memorable refrain in the piece tells us: “Me, A Little Bird and A Bell - so different, but each one so perfect”. This composition is layered with creative modern vocal harmonies, and with instrumental (piano) counter melodies, which represent the “differences” that the poet tried to describe. Kamei’s exquisite vocal interpretation adds further depth to the piece, and the overall result truly reflects the sensibilities of the renowned historical text.
