Details:
Lee Younger is in many ways the epitome of the way music is made in the first decade of the twenty-first century. He can do his job as a pastor and spend time with his wife and three children, and write and record first-rate songs. Thanks to modern recording Lee’s acoustic songs are full and layered even though they are mainly produced by his own voice and his acoustic guitar.

Lee’s songs are marked musically by their fullness and multi-layered feel. Lee achieves this sound by using multiple acoustic guitar tracks and also occasionally incorporating instruments such as a cello or mandolin. Lee’s deep knowledge of music shines through in this technique and you can hear his years as a devoted Beatles fan coming through in the use of stereo imaging and unique, full harmonies. If you are musically literate enough to recognize techniques such as counterpoint you will find such subtleties in Lee’s music, and if you don’t you will just notice that the songs are never repetitive or boring.

Lyrically, Lee is unique from many of his singer-songwriter brethren. His songs describe scenes, similar to the way that the New Testament itself often doesn’t tell the reader all the detail of someone’s story with a beginning, middle and end; but gives an account of an episode in the subject’s life. Lee paints these moments with a deft combination of music and lyrics, never relying on one at the expense of the other. His lyrics and instrumentation have a complimentary and dependent relationship, which makes his songs engrossing snapshots. Lee often tells the stories of people like Zacchaeus or the father of the prodigal son from the first person, inhabiting the thoughts and emotions of the subject and inviting his listeners to join him in doing so.

Lee’s sound is unique, and has varied influences. The melodic and technical influence of the Beatles is evident, as is the folk pop sensibilities of the Counting Crows August and Everything After. He also bears similarities to the Christian music world’s Derek Webb in the technique of creating a “wall of sound”, and also to artists like Rich Mullins and Andrew Peterson in his lyrical aims to encourage and examine a life of faith.

Lee got a bass for Christmas in the ninth grade and since then he’s been writing songs and playing in bands like Catch 22 along with Apurva Mehrotra (Kervin, Not Now Right Now) and Nathan Lux (44 Vegas), Younger Child with Helen Childs, Wayside, Vincent Cloud, The Heywoods and The Weatherfileds with Ryan Cox (The If You Wannas). Lee lives in Oak Ridge, Tennessee with his wife Christy, his daughters Anna and Norah, and his son Jack. He is the Youth Pastor and Worship Director at Christ Community Church in Oak Ridge.
