It is a fairly common occurrence that a musician gives a list of artists (both good and bad) that he has played with, to validate his or her existence in the musical world. This “bio” tells very little if anything about the heart of the person, or their sound, or their meaning, or the feelings that come across when they touch an instrument.
Bill Risby approaches a piano without fear. He embraces the silence around him as part of his sound. He plays the gaps between the notes, and he practises the precept that”nothing” is often the best thing to play.
I’ve seen a list of who he has played with, and his discography, much of which seemingly contradicts what his own music is all about, although the variety, gravity and scope of the people on his biography show that he is an open mind without boundaries, and that he can do anything he likes, and does.
Regardless of whom he has played with, if there is a common thread, a sound or a feeling which you can grasp and say “I know it’s him because…” then it is that he applies the second paragraph above to his whole life, and his whole life comes out when he plays.
