TWISTED OAK
(A project dedicated to our First Nations families and communities)
I remember sitting poolside in Studio City California 1994 thinking, “Man this a long way from home. How did I get here?” I wasn’t too impressed with smog, traffic or the weird “head space” the music/movie industry had to offer. It was like living on another planet. It was because of this experience that I decided never to pick up my guitar again or pursue a “career” in it. What happened though became very therapeutic for me as I began to write material that reconnected me to the spiritual heritage of my family and also to my First Nations roots at home in Canada. I never thought I’d ever have the nerve let alone the opportunity to sing or record this material. Little did I know I’d be sitting in, and working out of an office that was once part of St. Mary’s Catholic Residential and Boarding School in Mission, BC. As a native counsellor I found myself daily being reminded of the legacy of difficulties that our First Nations peoples have had to face for generations. More and more I became moved to record and perform these songs even though it was emotionally very difficult at times, without breaking down in tears during some of the sessions. If I had one thing to say it would be that these songs were created with good intentions for healing and reconciliation and loving encouragement for our First Nations people. I realize that I am no musician but I make no apologies for this project; it is as honest and intimate as they come.
Respectfully, Brander (“Standing Bear”) McDonald
