Details:
The Barn Swallows are an acoustic country-folk duo from the wooded suburbs between Philadelphia and Reading in Southeastern PA. Their tuneful sound is based squarely in the country, folk, and bluegrass traditions, while presenting a modern and unique approach to their originals and unusual covers. Their self-titled debut studio CD fuses bluegrass, folk, blues, and country to explore themes of joy, heartbreak, humor, and longing. The CD offers the deceptive simplicity of traditional forms without ever seeming imitative.

The Barn Swallows originally fused their country and rock origins at the time that “alt-country” and “Americana” began taking hold in the music world, but they tacked their sound in a more acoustic direction. Tight vocal harmonies and melodic dobro and guitar are present throughout their engaging, radio-friendly CD.

Sandy Pluta (vocals, dobro, guitar, and mandolin) and Matthew Gordon (vocals, guitar, harmonica and mandolin) built up a loyal following as two-thirds of the popular trio Blue Moon, playing together for over a decade. They formed the Barn Swallows in October 2006 to focus more on their songwriting, harmonies, and original works.

The soaring country-blues slide of Sandy''s dobro, along with her haunting country voice, bring to mind shades of Hazel Dickens and Iris Dement, and lend an authenticity to the Barn Swallows'' rootsy approach to the music. Hailing from Western PA in the foothills of the Appalachia Mountains, Sandy''s sound is solidly grounded in the gritty red clay of Appalachia, yet the honky-tonks of Tennessee and Texas resonate as well. Her deeply personal songs explore the disappointments and yearnings of relationships in a simple, direct manner. Sandy is also quite active with Musicians on Call, bringing her music to cheer children and adults in Philadelpia hospitals. Matthew''s dynamic guitar work and smooth vocal harmonies perfectly complement Sandy''s fragile and emotional sound. Matthew’s engaging original tunes involve tales of interesting and humorous characters and adventures.

Together, their music is soothing and spacious, drawing the listener in with bright and intriguing dobro and guitar work, and lyrics that are deceptively simple, yet profoundly poetic. They have finished their debut studio CD which they are targeting for a February 2011 release date. They have been received well by audiences ranging from small listening rooms to large festivals, and many bars, coffehouses, private parties, weddings, wineries, and clubs in between.

Highlights of the CD include the instant classic "Yet Another Train Song", featuring Sandy’s high lonesome dobro and Matthew’s wheel-churning mandolin runs, flying over Sandy’s vocal lamentations about an uncaring train passing her by. Matthew finger-picks some amusing country-blues about an unhappy dog left behind by an ex-lover on "Maybelle", featuring hot fiddler guest Michael Salsburg. Matthew also contributes the touching song of loss and remembrance, "Easter Sunday", with Sandy''s fingers pulling the listener''s heart strings along with her dobro strings. Another highlight is Sandy’s "Play Me Something Pretty", a Willie Nelson-inspired country song augmented by some sweet accordion by guest Tom Montgomery. Paul Pluta keeps the bottom solid with stand-up bass on all the tracks.
