The Red Onions knew they were on to something when the singer Paul Gonzalez hurled himself into the drum kit at their first practice. Like a lot of great punk bands, the Red Onions have unlikely and humble origins; they met while working at a Gardena California K-Mart. While they have gone in various directions with their day jobs the remainder of their lives is now focused upon writing music and recording as The Red Onions.
The songs on their new Fat Possum/Flapping Jet EP are tightly packed rock nuggets, with a proud low end and hair raising fuzz guitar solos. Recorded with John Reis(Hot Snakes, Drive like Jehu, Rocket From the Crypt), who knows a thing or two about Soul/Roots music, the EP is set to establish The Red Onions as the most vital band to emerge from Los Angeles'' South Bay since Black Flag.
Currently nominated for a 2004 LA Weekly music award for Best New Rock band this debut EP is sure to establish The Red Onions as one of the most explosive new bands in the country.

A lotta bands try to hotwire the Detroit sound of the latter ''60s, but the Red Onions - four young working- class guys from Gardena - come closest to actually channeling that primal, high-energy Stooges, MC5 sound. It''s cuz they''ve got songs, friend, and it''s cuz they got solid players, and it''s cuz their singer, Paul, is one of those littler, dangerous guys (think Iggy, Keith Morris, etc) who go absolutely firecrackers on stage. A coupla week ago they put on an unforgettable, estatic show at a party in a Silver Lake skate shop: Joined by a tuff saxist on a coupla numbers, they closed with a cover of the Stooges classic "Funhouse." As the band wailed, Paul jumped into the crowd- and was passed on hands from the stage all the way out the door. Unbelievable!

So what do you get for your money on this one? A pretty good deal actually. 5 crazy and raw rock and roll songs from these spazz''s who work the catchy punk, handclap, ''everybody come up to the front'' angle real well. The opening ''Gimme Some More '' starts with a simple drumbeat that builds into some great fuzzed out guitar solos, it ends in some Spanish, which I found nice. The vocals have a kind of Hives delivery with maybe a little more of a snarl but the production by John Reis (Rocket From the Crypt/Hot Snakes) is very un-Hives like -just simple bash and strum but it only adds to the charm of these punky punk rockers. The Red Onions, one more reason why Cali is OK in my book.
