The year was 1979. Sugarhill Gang exploded onto the airwaves and park jams with the first “official” hip-hop
spin. This explosion originally starting in the New
York-Jersey area, spreaded like wildfire, reaching far west as Los Angeles and as far south as Miami.
From this trickle-down theory, the seeds of emceeing were
planted in two unlikely places —the great port city of
Baltimore and the smalltowns of the Florida Panhandle—
the stomping grounds of hip-hop’s hottest newcomers,
Rebel & tha Peacemaka
Fast forward to 2006, Reb & P are the latest of hip-hop’s
dynamic duos. Born one day apart under the sign of Virgo, the zodiac sign of perfection, Reb & P are faithfully bonded by the single desire to make everything around them claiming to be hip-hop better. However, as one can guess, their first meeting didn''t go over so well.
“It’s funny now ‘but when I met P six years ago, I was in the studio with an act I was working with. He came to the studio to meet with another group. Dude had the balls to interrupt our session and tell my peeps they weren’t spitting their lyrics right; he was straight running it down to them. He didn’t know them from Adam, but he was letting them have it! After he left, my crew was like ‘What the hell?’ I was even heated that dude had the nerve to lay down law on a session he had nothing to do with, much less pay for. But you know what? Every point he made, he was totally right. Whatever fire he lit, it worked. My mans and ‘em spit their sh*t correctly. I guess it was ‘coz they were upset at his audacity. But whatever was his motive, it worked. That’s when I decided I wanted to team up with him. He displayed the same flame for hip-hop that I had. And he wasn’t ashamed to wear hisheart on his sleeve about it.”
Thus started the genesis of this powerful union. And, in
December 2000, in between taking care of their respective families, they started recording their classic debut, Return Uv Tha Essence (Tha Antidote).
It had taken six long years from recording to mixing and
mastering to sitting on the project ‘til the industry was
ready, but the end result was and is exactly what they were shooting for: Bringing a timeless masterpiece to life.
In their relentless pursuit of the artform, they have sat
thru many changes in the industry. Now the pendulum has swung back in favor of good ol’ boom bap. During their two-year wait, they have developed a chemistry unmatched since the golden days of EPMD.
Anyone who has seen a Reb & P show will confirm that this duo is on point showman-wise. They feed off each other’s energy, often finishing each other’s thoughts.
“That’s my bruh from anuh. I have complete faith in Reb’s ability to rock a crowd. Ialways tell him that I don’t
care to follow trends, that I don’t care if anyone thinks I am soft, ‘coz I’m not bling-blinged up on record, or ‘coz I didn’t kill anyone on wax or ‘coz I didn’t smack some hoes on they asses. Shoot, I’m killing tracks with a passion. Most people keep it real. I keep it ‘actual’. I guess he felt the same way ‘coz that’s been what we stood for ever since we joined forces. It’s to the point that we don’t even have to rehearse for shows. We do what’s natural, and we dare to show people that we enjoy making music.”
The next step for them is to secure compatible distribution to help showcase the much-needed positive
energy they inject into this thang called hip-hop. In the
meantime, they will continue to market and promote and
sell their album out of pocket, out of trunks, at shows, on the internet, with bootleggers, or any other way to get
their album heard.
“We waited six years for this. Everything that we spit on
the album has come to fruition. We see it as God’s words
channeling through us. We can’t sacrifice this gift for a
quick score. Too many chess pieces have been moved in
our favor for us to blow such an opportunity to show the
world. . . The industry needs us badly to interject new
blood into the system. I think we can handle such a
beautiful burden. That’s what we’ve built our whole
hip-hop careers on: showing the world that being yourself is just as refreshing as being a social caricature.”
