Regarding the music for his new CD "Back in Your Own Backyard", Chris writes (from liner notes):

"It always should be about the music! For me, choosing songs to record is a monumental task, mainly because there are so many that I love. Which way do I go? Originally I wanted to do a Duke Ellington tribute-Duke was, and is extremely influential, important, and inspirational in my musical life. He’s the only one of the true pioneers, masters of the music (Louis, Bird, Basie, Miles, Trane, etc.) that I ever actually got to hear in person, meet and briefly speak with. I hope to get to do that recording -some tunes are chosen, arrangements in mind, etc.!

Then, 2009 marked the 50th anniversary of Lester Young’s passing, and his 100th birthday. His music is what this recording set out to be about originally, but turned out quite a bit different which is fine. He’s definitely an inspiration here.

I came to Lester Young’s music late in music school (this was in the late 70s, when Tom Scott, David Sanborn, Michael Brecker, and Joe Farrell were the saxophone players we all listened to). My saxophone teacher at the University of Bridgeport, Gary Klein, told me to check out Lester. Gary, like Joe Lovano later on would also do, really stressed to me the importance of the history of the music, and to study what is now quite a remarkable lineage of great jazz tenor players.

The first record I got (that’s right, vinyl 33 1/2 rpm record) was part of a series called “The Lester Young Story” on Columbia records, a part of CBS, who at the time was doing a big re-issue push. This volume featured Lester’s sides with Billie Holiday. I immediately fell in with the feeling and swing of these recordings. I loved “When You’re Smiling”, “I Can’t Get Started”, and “The Very Thought of You”- all those tunes. One tune I especially liked was called “Back in Your Own Backyard”.

Over the years I came to love Lester’s music. His swinging, melodic, approach, deceptively simple, yet like so many of the jazz greats (especially Louis Armstrong), is impossible to duplicate.

So with Lester in mind, and the idea of home, simple pleasures and love, I chose the (following) tunes."
