Details:
"In this 2011 recording, interpreting the music has met the same challenges confronting all those who have attempted it since it was composed 118 years ago. The eclectic directions given by Satie can be interpreted in several ways and after some thought, I’ve approached the composition from a different perspective. The tempo indication as written says that it is to be performed “very slow”. But Satie gives no indication of specific metronomical tempo. To say that a quaver = 10bpm or that an eighth note should equal 3 bpm is a subjective judgment call. It can be argued that the tempo could easily be a whole note, or even a complete measure can equal 40 bpm. Give this vagueness, I have taken the instructions to mean that the piece should unfold slowly over the total time of the piece with a variance in the feel of these mertonomical possibilities. The tradition, or should I say habit of attempting a performance of the work with 840 repetitions comes from the initial performance given by John Cage and his associates, but the score does not dictate such a performance. Satie instructs that "In order to play the theme 840 times in succession ...”, implying that if one wishes to do this, performers should prepare themselves in a particular way (in the deep silence, by serious immobilities). But Satie does not mandate 840 repetitions of the theme and would appear instead to allow a choice of how much time a performer wishes to spend on the little composition, perhaps appreciating a marathon performance should one choose to do so. Given this perspective, the listener can count the number of repetitions in this recording and loop the play back until they are adequately satisfied; in fact this music can last for days or weeks. There are also no dynamic indications in the score. I have taken this to mean that a single dynamic level can occur throughout the duration and this is the experience of this realization of Vexations; one singular dynamic level through the performance." - Saragoza
