Nominated for best hard rock/metal band of 2002- L.A. Weekly Music Awards

Seeing Biblical Proof of UFOs perform live never fails to prompt the question: Are these guys a metal band or what? On the surface they definitely are - seismic power chords and rasping vocals, furious drumming, bone-quaking bass lines (that actually mimic the sound of otherworldly spacecraft), all amped at thunderous levels and played really dang fast. Moveover, typical BPUFO fans have those trademarked doughy, blooshot eyes and are keen on throwing submissive devil signs at their idols.
All indications say: metal, plain and simple. But the UFOs'' life force shares a structural and tonal affinity with jazz, most noticeably when drummer Michael Peffer gets to whacking the high hats and toms and rims, filling the frequent empty spaces with off-time beats, pushing and the pulling the rug out from any kind of predicatable flow. The trio sets up like an egalitarian jazz band, too, with a stage configuration that has vocalist Joey D. acting more as a sideman than a front man, with skinsman Peffer the nucleus up front in the center. Each member shines with solos at some point, albeit subtly.
But let''s not book them into the Jazz Bakery just yet. Biblical Proof are as obnoxiously loud as Queens of the Stone Age and the raunchiness equals of the Melvins.

Biblical Proof of UFOs is a rock group -- neither from Mars or Venus. -- but with its roots in the heartland: Cleveland, Ohio to be exact. The life force and tempo setter is a drummer by the name of Michael Peffer, a midwest musician of intestinal, instinctive, perhaps even cosmological powers and prophecies. Peffer is a name that can easily be stacked, among other, right next to Tool''s Danny Carey or Rush''s Neil Peart, in identifying the great rock drummers of L.A.
As a band, each of the UFOs know their instruments well, and they know how to make them speak. Witness their 1998 full-length debut album "Superfi" - a strictly instrumental rock. Even without lyrics, the orchestral feel was full, profoundly full, coming about as close -- or as far -- to classical music as it was to rock music. Shortly thereafter, the UFOs moved to Los Angeles (1999) to begin work on another album. While rehearsing in the newly adopted city, the band collectively began to write lyrics, and guitarist Joey D. serendiptously put a voice atop the manic precision of UFOs'' instrumental soundscape. The result is today''s Bibilcal Proof of UFOs, a tightly crafted rock ship that is doing orbital laps around the conglomerated, and sometimes indistinguishable, Sunset Strip music scene. After years of establishing camaraderie, and now armed with vocals, the UFOs are to be undertood and appreciated. Finally!
Give a listen to the curiously titled "Two Minute Warning", a penetrating rock fugue that is a direct descendant of the UFOs'' former lyric-less past, and you''ll see clearly the distinction between the potential, and the realization, of transcendence through instrumental power. Or, on the same set of new demos, listen to the anthem "It''s Hard". This is a song that has blood in it, battling defeatism and optimism at once, ending in an apathetic chorus that runs "Can''t make a dollar, and can''t keep a buck/if you''re next to follow, then you''re shit out of luck/because things will be fine in a fortnight or two/and I''m biding time, till I get home to you." Repeat, again, so on.
The truest way to digest the genius of the UFOs is to see them perform live. Peffer''s kit is set up directly in the center of the stage, in the spotlight, and it is there that he launches himself full throttle, singing, keeping perfect time -- and defying all natural laws of limitation. Leaning in, bassist Ray Piller gives off the motoring warble of a flying spacecraft with his lines, while guitarist Joey D., in unison with Peffer singing the songs, allows his guitar to be that celestial nebuala through which his lyrics are filtered. To be bold (Goeth be with me!), the UFOs of Cleveland represent the revitalization of those great Los Angeles rock bands. Check them out at the small clubs now, because Obscurity isn''t a suitable home for these guys, and they won''t be living there for long.

Biblical Proof of UFOs is a 4 piece outfit hinting on sounds as not quite as weird as The Fucking Champs, but move closer to the sounds of Don Caballero or Slint... but make no mistakes, these guys rock hard, venturing close to metal at times.
Some of their stuff is almost Am-Rep noise sounding, once in a while it reminds me of great bands like Dazzling Killmen, Regraped or Bread Winner... Shiny Beast, Stinking Lizaveta or Jesus Lizard. Super precise at times and great changes. All these guys exorcise extreme chops constantly. It''s definitely math rock, but no the super confusing style... these cats seem to generally write in a style that is easy to understand and bang your head/fist to.
Very impressive slab of rock.

One spin will conclusively prove that Cleveland power trio''s ears pick up when you say "Don Caballero". Flip it over, and picture yourself at a friend''s hole of an apartment, drinking cheap beer and listening to Slint records. None of these descriptions is (sic) pejorative because the Proof approach underground-rock aesthetics with ambition and a wicked energy that is sorely lacking in the work of similar sounding bands.

Wow!! Buy this now! See this band live! I wish I could describe the physical sensations that coursed through my body the first time I saw these guys play live. My jaw fell open in shock. My feet were firmly planted in front of the stage and could not be coerced into fetching another beer.
-Sour Grapes

By far the best fucking thing to hit my turntable this year is biblical proof of UFOs. Layered parts on top of each other brick by brick to the point a face-plant into some damn solid rock in imminent. Fans of tortoise and Hammerhead take notice.
