James L. Hosay is a former Staff Arranger/Composer for the United States Army Band (Pershing''s Own) in Washington, DC. He is now retired from active military service and resides in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He is very active as a Composer, Arranger, Producer and Conductor, and is a regular Ajudicator for local educational music festivals. He has been twice commissioned by the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and is the Principal Arranger for the Virginia International Tattoo.

CHOCOLATE BEFORE NOON is a culmination of almost a decade of work, dating back to 2003 when I wrote SOUTHSIDE SUITE as part of a jazz Play-Along CD for Curnow Music Press, featuring Chris Vadala (of Chuck Mangione fame) on Sax and Vincent DiMartino on Trumpet. I expanded the arrangements into full Jazz Orchestra charts and recorded them at Omega Studios in Rockville Maryland with an outstanding group of Washington/Baltimore area musicians.
The title work of this album was written for and is dedicated to my wonderful wife, Laura Kelley, who actually came up with the title CHOCOLATE BEFORE NOON. The work is arranged for String Quartet, Piano and African Percussion, and features some incredible performances by Bill Batte on Electric Violin and Piano, David Hufstedler on Bass, and my son Alex Hosay on Electric Guitar.
The jazz-pop instrumental, CINDERELLA AFTERNOON, was also written for my wife, who came up with that title as well. For my arrangement of the immortal jazz standard HERE’S THAT RAINY DAY, I used the traditional jazz harmonies associated with the song, but incorporated a contemporary fusion style in the rhythm parts.
Michel LeGrand’s jazz-pop masterpiece “HAPPY”, from his Academy Award nominated score for the motion picture LADY SINGS THE BLUES has always been one of my favorites, so I decided to do a jazzy R&B style arrangement of it and feature the incredible talents of Bill Batte on the Piano.
This album is lovingly dedicated to my wife Laura Kelley, who has waited patiently for it’s completion since it was promised to her as a gift two birthdays ago. But as they say - “Good things come to those who wait”.
