Details:
Jason Chamakese currently resides on the Pelican Lake First Nation in Saskatchewan, Canada. He is fluent in his Plains Cree language and strongly rooted in his traditional beliefs. As a small child, he recalls his mother singing traditional songs as she went about her day to day activities. These memories and his firm cultural background and respect for traditional story and song played an integral role in his discovery of the Native American flute over a decade ago.
Influenced and mentored by Kevin Locke and William Gutierrez, Jason has taken his music to many appreciative audiences throughout North America. Windspeaker magazine has described his music as “soothing, inspiring, and powerful.” In 2008, his first album “Midnight at Clearwater, Native American Flute Songs, vol. 1” received nominations for Best Flute Album at the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards and the Aboriginal People’s Choice Music Awards. He considers his work within schools to be the most important as he uses his gifts towards inspiring First Nations and non-First Nations youth into making positive and healthy lifestyle choices. Through the use of traditional stories and songs, he hopes to awaken pride and identity to those he reaches out to. In addition, he hopes to promote positive and mutual respect amongst all peoples regardless of race, color, or creed. His second album features his collaborative partner on vocals, Robert Gladue.

Robert Gladue is Cree and hails from the Waterhen Lake First Nation in northern Saskatchewan. Under the mentorship of relatives and friends, he began singing at the age of sixteen. He has traveled extensively to many pow-wows and round dances and has established himself as a leading singer on the round dance trail. He hopes to inspire other First Nations youth, and to help them to realize the importance of respect for the drum. He thanks the Creator for blessing him with the gift of song and the drum, which he believes is the very heartbeat of Mother Earth. He also credits his family and friends for encouraging him along his path as a drug and alcohol free role model and singer. He is currently working on his first solo round dance CD following the phenomenal success of his Youtube submission entitled “Robert’s Song” which has over 150,000 views to date.

As Chamakese & Gladue, these young men have recently joined their talents to create beautiful music, combining contemporary round-dance songs and generations old Cree serenading songs with the haunting voice of the flute to create a moving experience for their listeners. In July of 2010 they had the great distinction of performing their first show as Chamakese & Gladue at the internationally recognized Banff Center of the Arts in Banff, Alberta. Through the use of story and song, it is their intent to positively influence and inspire First Nations youth into taking a keen interest in reclaiming their language and taking pride in their culture, which they can use as a solid foundation towards making their goals a reality. In addition to this, they strongly believe that through sharing and educating one another, positive relations can be established amongst all people.
