Although she just celebrated her eighteenth birthday, Nikki Lang has racked up the achievements and credits one would expect from a seasoned veteran. An accomplished singer-songwriter, Nikki writes all of her own material and leads her own band.
Nikki’s recent accomplishments include the completion of her new EP, Feel Better, and wrapping production on her first major music video for the EP’s title track. The video was directed by Emmy-winning director Todd Robinson (Lonely Hearts starring John Travolta). She is currently preparing for her first national tour, supporting Atlantic recording artist Robert Francis.
Coming from a family steeped in the performing arts—her father Rocky is a successful film producer and writer; her uncle Mike, a well-known jazz pianist and session musician; her grandmother¬¬¬ Monica Lewis was a singer/recording artist during the swing era—Nikki took to music naturally and at an early age developed impressive chops on guitar and piano along with her singing voice. By age 16, she was in the studio with producer Jay Ferguson (Spirit, Jo Jo Gunne, countless TV and film scores) tracking her first recordings. The recordings were self-released as the CD Time Has Stopped, which has long-since been sold-out at shows and on-line.
Nikki soon began appearing solo with her acoustic guitar as well as fronting her band at venues such as the Hotel Café, Baked Potato, Cozy’s, House of Blues, the Mint, Genghis Cohen, Knitting Factory, Café Was, and the Coffee Gallery Backstage in Los Angeles, Seattle, Orlando and San Francisco. With the L.A. County High School for the Arts Jazz Vocal Group, she has appeared at the Monterey Jazz Festival twice. The Jazz Vocal group also won the Down Beat Award for best Jazz Vocal group in the country.
Her true musical inspiration, though, is her own songs, which come straight from her personal experiences. Nikki’s songs of self-discovery and empowerment read like a handbook for young girls coming of age. Songs such as “My Sad Hero,” “Cute but Stupid,” and “Bros before Hos” speak directly to a young audience largely experiencing the same heartbreaks and victories that Nikki is. Tracked at the world-famous Record Plant studio, her latest CD Feel Better was produced by Jason Goldman, who has worked as an instrumentalist and a arranger for artists such as Michael Bublé, David Foster, and Clay Aiken, and engineered/mixed by Mike Butler, who has engineered projects for the Pretenders, the Shins, Five for Fighting, Death Cab for Cutie and countless others.
Beside her own career, Nikki has also contributed to benefit recordings for the Christopher Reeve Foundation alongside Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters. She has also worked with the foundations Medtronics Corporation and Children with Diabetes.
