The Artists:
Internationally renowned cellist, Misha Quint, performs "Valse Sentimentale," a recording of epic proportions to fit all moods. His sensitive playing of these Russian composers is both sentimental (as the title suggests) and exceptionally intense.

Misha Quint is joined by Svetlana Gorokhovich, a renowned collaborative pianist. Her deeply perceptive performance eloquently complements the cello.

The Music:
Tchaikovsky’s "Valse Sentimentale," a transcription of the last of his "Six Morceaux" (pieces) written originally for piano, is performed with unsurpassed sensitivity and compassion. The combination of this and the low underlying power of the cello’s notes creates a perfect introduction for this recording.

Playing this piece that was composed during an extremely arduous time of Tchaikovsky’s life, Misha Quint pours the suffering and “capricious” turns of mood into his full-bodied interpretation of "Pezzo Capriccioso, Op. 62." Pezzo’s virtuosity contrasts with the romantic beauty of the Valse.

A dramatic divorce and passionate love affair describe Shostakovich’s life when he wrote the "Sonata for Cello and Piano in D Minor, Op.40" in 1934. The piece is full of romantic melodies only to be found in the unique music inherent to Shostakovich’s style. Quint and Gorokhovich emphasize these avant-garde harmonies and scintillating melodies with perfect precision and intelligent interpretation.

Stravinsky’s "Suite Italienne" is based on a theme from an opera by Pergolesi, a composer from the Baroque period of music. Stravinsky transformed this opera into a ballet and asked the famous cellist, Gregor Piatigorsky, to help him transcribe it for cello and piano. This piece is an intensely virtuosic demonstration on the part of the performers and melodic beauty.

The recording concludes with the mournful and loving "Nocturne" by Tchaikovsky. It is the fourth of his "Six Morceaux" and was written in isolation in a cottage near Komenka, where Tchaikovsky could feel at peace.
