Details:
Cothran, the former lead singer for the highly acclaimed rock band, The Evinrudes (Mercury/DAS), now releases “Sunland,” her second solo album and sixth in her discography. The album is a long awaited follow up to her post Evinrudes solo release, “Who Let the World In,” that garnered critical praise and secured soundtrack placements on a few popular t.v. shows. Seven years in the making, “Sunland” emerged as the product of a new horizon: recently graduating from Vanderbilt University’s graduate program in religion, Cothran earned a Masters of Divinity and also received an appointment to serve as a United Methodist minister in a parish in urban West Nashville.

“Sunland” combines the energy and familiar chemistry of the Evinrudes (all of the former band including classical composer, Conni Ellisor, and popular pianist, Jonathon Hamby, contributed to the album) while illuminating the beauty and intimacy of Cothran’s voice and point of view. Exploring stories of ancient religious texts, in her newfound profession, Cothran reveals the unified field of preacher and songwriter, pastor and artist, singer and spiritual leader. To complete the project, Cothran partnered with engineer/professor, John McClure, whose groundbreaking work in the field of music and theological invention caught Cothran’s attention while attending the Masters of Divinity program at Vanderbilt University. Dr. McClure, Charles G. Finney Professor of Homiletics, enabled Cothran to bring the project to fruition through theological as well as technical means. McClure engineered, mixed and mastered the project in his studio as well as providing ongoing space and conversation for the theological invention of the song/sermon.

"Sunland" explores the landscape of voices of women from the ancient text, enabling them to be thoroughly modern while not sacrificing their mystery and intrigue. Consider them theme songs, if you will. You will hear from Rahab, the harlot; Deborah the judge and prophetess of Israel; The Witch of Endor, the Strange Woman of Proverbs and many more. These women were not meant to be locked up inside the text, their voices are timeless and demand a new hearing for the modern age. Perhaps you will find some of your own themes in their stories.
