This Powerpoppin’ band hail from a part of the world usually associated with Joe Cocker, Def Leppard, Saxon, Human League and the Comsat Angels. Whatever rises from this land of coal and steel is usually honest, gritty and creative. That fact remains the same here.
The law of averages states that something good has to come out of Rotherham. Often described as the poor relation to neighbouring Sheffield and having the dubious distinction of being one of the most deprived areas in the north of England it is surprising the music generated from this part of the UK is so positive, diverse and full of spark.
After years of individual struggle in numerous bands the five band members now have the freedom and perfect vehicle to create the music they’ve always wanted. They play a well observed mix of 70’s, 80’s and 90’s pop/rock that echoes Big Star, Gigolo Aunts and the Gin Blossoms and takes in newer influences along the way. Melody is king here and whether it’s a dumb-ass rocker or a jangle pop ballad you’re never more than a few seconds away from a giant hook. Classic guitar driven music with big power and subtle edges married to thoughtful lyrics with no pretentions. This is the trademark.
Years of gigging, playing all forms of music and constantly honing the art of songwriting is now starting to blend the ‘Sylvia sound’ and the process of getting it to the wider world begins now.
The first single released in March 2011 recorded with Steve Ellis at Orion Studios, Rotherham, will be followed by an album later in the year. If you need your rock with a melodic overcoat or your pop with a ballsy edge you owe it to yourselves to get acquainted with Sylvia. The guys will do the introductions.
