Having a minimal pared down sound has always been a priority rather then having a lot of instrumentation and volume. " I have always felt a need to be led and also lead worship in a way that strips down the business, noise of our lives when we enter into worship so that we can hear each others voices connecting as one in Christ. Singing a balance of original music as well as reviving hymns is what Rachel is most passionate about. Singing hymns gives us a deep sense of belonging for we sing the songs of many voices and cultures before us.
Along with having a pared down sound, having an experiential worship experience has been another passion. To get us focused off the screen or the team itself and focus foremost on the Cross, but also how our bodies, thoughts, souls and voices respond to one another; reminding each other that Jesus dwells in each of us!
Rachel is releasing her first worship cd, Un-wasted. The title captures the theme of the cd which is that there isn''t anything that we have been through or done that is a waste or that we are a waste. For through our confession, we are redeemed by the amazing wild love of Jesus through His sacrifice. He takes all things and makes them new and whole. This cd is a result of the outpouring of the love and faithfulness that Christ poured within me. As Isaiah 62 says, we are no longer called desolate or deserted; but are called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord bestows upon us!
The cd I recorded is what I call "shell" form. Intentionally simple and not heavily layered so that it can easily be sung in all cultures and all churches; for there is never a lack of or excess of sound, because God always gives enough. The needs of how these songs are given are in great hope to spur creativity and adaptation depending on the needs of where you are called to worship.
Rachel resides in Grand Rapids, Michigan with her husband and two children. She joyfully leads worship with Grace team at Madison Square CRC. In addition to leading at Madison, Rachel has loved connecting and sharing with Mars Hill as a guest worship leader; and contributes to 30God ministries with devotionals and music.
