About Hemant Panwar
Over several years, Hemant Panwar has contributed very significantly to the South Asian music scene in Canada and India as a performer, composer, lyricist, and singer. What has distinguished Hemant are his innovative and creative attempts to fuse traditional lyrics and rhythms from many parts of India with others from other lands and cultures, thus generating much interest in young musicians, dancers and connoisseurs of art.
Hemant was trained in Indian classical vocal in Delhi under the tutelage of illustrious teachers, Baldev R. Verma and Shanti Sharma, and tabla playing under Shabban Khan Sahib. To his credit, concurrently, Hemant mastered the Indian classical dance Kathak under the guidance of Guru Shri Rajinder Gangani.
Over the years, Hemant has been invited to present music and dance concerts in many countries in Europe and Asia, receiving critical acclaim and applause by large and enthusiastic audiences. Recipient of several prizes and fellowships, in 2002, Hemant was sent as a cultural ‘ambassador’ by Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) to teach music and dance in Georgetown, Guyana.
Hemant released a new CD called ‘The Creator’, displaying his talent as a singer and composer of distinction. Hemant has displayed his dexterity as a torch-bearer of Rajasthani folk traditions in music in number of cultural and community events, and in concerts.
As well, Hemant is often invited by various schools and libraries in Ontario as an exponent of Indian music and dance, to present classes and workshops for all age groups.
Hemant came to Canada in 2006 as cultural educator in Richmond Hill, Ontario where he developed elaborate syllabus for music and dance teaching for different age groups. He has set up branches of Panwar Music & Dance Academy together with his wife Vaishali in several locations in GTA, for learners from all cultural backgrounds.
In Canada, performing as a musician and a dancer, Hemant is much in demand, from Ottawa to Saskatoon, and all across the country.
To make his lyrics and rhythms even more accessible to a wider audience, increasingly Hemant has been experimenting with fusing western instruments with traditional Indian percussion, and light classical Indian melodies with some Canadian lyrics.
In short, it can be said that Hemant has taken bold steps in creating innovative music compositions and styles in his new chosen land, generating interest in his work across the communities and age groups.
