Mackey Tapes is an album that is haunted by a break up and inspired by the scenery of the North Carolina mountains songwriter Bob Burnette has always lived in. Mackey''s Creek is located in Old Fort NC, and in a cabin in the remote wilderness the album''s tracking began. The track of land is owned by Bob''s uncle, Tom Burnette, who is a big-foot researcher.....yes. Seriously.
Under cover of stars, Josh Martier laid down the percussion and George Sweet laid down bass under the direction of producer David Barrett. After the foundation was set, Bob worked with David on the addition the multitude of instruments that followed. Using a Macbook and some very serious mics, the two recorded in many different living room settings all over Asheville. The idea was to use all the resources they could from friends like amps, moogs, guitars, keys. Several Asheville musicians lent their talent to the project for some amazing results.
For songwriter/band leader Bob Burnette, this album is the high water mark for ambition. Bob has worked with both George and Josh on separate projects before, but collectively they have reached a new level with Mackey Tapes. The album is full of life and heavy sighs all at once with cellos, violins, moogs, piano, and even a theremin adding to the traditional guitar based Indie rock overtones. The album is lush, full, and full; heavy hearted and hopeful all at the same time.
