Details:
Minneapolis may be rife with strumming artists, but Ash St. John, an independent singer and songwriter from St. Paul, stands out among them. From one song to another he transitions from melodic, memory-evoking chord progressions to aggressive and direct vocal projection while still retaining the mood of an intimate performance.

Ash St. John’s latest EP entitled “False Prophecies” shows a dramatic step forward in terms of songwriting and musicianship. The songs are thoughtful yet well structured. St. John’s songwriting has been propelled forward creatively by a year of constant writing and performing.
(It has been over a year since last release, “the faint whisper calling.”) The overall maturation of the sound is astounding. The sound that results is reminiscent of a rocker’s solo foray into a sweeter self-expression. St. John is clearly embracing the pop-rock roots of his youth while keeping an eye on the future. What results is a contemporary pop/folk rock sound. The 4 tracks of False Prophecies each bring a unique dynamic.

The opening track False Prophecy opens with a quiet flurry of palm muted guitars and shimmering violin strokes. The song builds to a climax which is both resolute and full of palpable tension. “Brick Streets” showcases the artist’s ability to strip down a song to the bare essential of melody and sparse instrumentation. The sound that is left has the ability to reach across the genre divide. “This is not your day” is a touching song about how life can change so quickly. It speaks to a whole host of people who have been touched by hard times and/or illness.
Finally,” Some Distant Place” gently rounds out the EP with a picturesque scene dreaming of beautiful surroundings and happier days. False Prophecies is a glimpse into what the future holds for this contemporary budding artist.
