Details:
On his second exploration of traditional music on the saxophone Alistair Gillies offers 12 tracks varying between solo sax, sax and guitar, full sax section ''highlife'' style music and just about everything in between! Whilst there is a respect for the traditional tune Alistair really does explore what is possible with a couple of saxophones and a digital multi-track recording studio, assisted by the wonderful guitarist John Buckley.
Alistair is one of England''s more high profile players of traditional music on the saxophone [and yes there are quite a few around!] and plays on the folk festival and ceilidh club circuit in the English ceilidh band All Blacked Up and other line-ups. He has run ''playing traditional music for dance'' workshops at major English folk festivals and his music can also be found on his first ''solo'' CD ''by arrangement'' and on ''Carolan''s Concerto'' a collaboration with the fiddler player Jon Hayward performing the music of the 17th century Irish Harper Turlough O''Carolan on soprano sax and fiddle.
On FOLKSAX Alistair plays soprano and tenor saxophones made by the family firm Yanagisawa and demonstrates his versatility as a musician as well as how versatile traditional music is. Most of the tunes come from the common traditional repertoire with 4 modern ones composed in the traditional idiom, one classical piece [The Hole in the Wall] composed by Henry Purcell and adopted by folk musicians after being included by Thomas Playford in the English Dancing Master of 1698 and one air of his own.
John Buckley puts the music into context by playing great and varied accompaniment on acoustic guitar by Lowden, semi-acoustic guitar by Peerless and bass guitar by Yamaha.
