Directed by Sarah Andrew Wilson and assistant director Lisa Sheldone, the Woodbridge Flute Choir was founded in 1996 by Rebecca Jeffreys as an outlet and learning experience for volunteer adult flutists. Since its inception, the choir has presented concerts at regular concert series, charitable and gala events, Flute Society of Washington concerts, flute choir festivals, the Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair, the National Flute Association convention, the Kennedy Center, and the White House.
Realizing the need for music written specifically for flute choir, fund-raising efforts have allowed the WFC to commission original works and present world premieres for composers from across the nation. In 2000, the choir commissioned Dr. Gretchen Morse to write Woodbridge Suite, a work inspired by the geographical characteristics and history of the Prince William County area in Virginia. Woodbridge Suite became the title piece of the choir''s first CD. In 2001, the WFC commissioned local composer Melvin Lauf, Jr. to write a piece based on a work of art of the composer''s choice. The resulting composition, Southern Peace, debuted in 2001 to great acclaim and is featured on the choir''s second CD. Since Southern Peace, the choir has commissioned four additional new works: ''Fanfare'' by Virginia composer Lee Larsen (premiered in May 2003), ''Elmer'' by Virginia composer Melvin Lauf Jr. (premiered in May 2004), ''Seafarer''s Suite'' by Nancy Wood (premiered in October 2004), and ''Wooden Bridge'' by Maryland composer Jonathan Cohen (to be premiered in May 2005).
The group has also produced three commercial CDs, Woodbridge Suite (2000), Passages (2002), and A Silver Christmas (2004), each featuring music written specifically for the ensemble.
