For the five members of The Catalyst, whose lineup has fluctuated multiple times over a 3 year stint, it is quite apparent that the quintuplet out of Chillicothe, MO has never been more satisfied with the relationship, and chemistry (as cliche'' as it is) that has been formed between the current members in the short time the group has been together. "I think when you can lock yourself in a room with a group of musicians, especially two guys you''ve never worked with before (drummer Julien Soto and bassist Blaine Filbert), and you immediately begin to feed off of each other...you know you have something good evolving", says guitarist and vocalist COLT SCHNEITER, when asked about what was circulating in everyone''s heads during the first stages of writing their new EP "Choices". "At first, we had no idea what to expect, or if it would even work out. Everyone in the band kinda has their own style and ideas towards everything. And to be honest, i think that worked to our advantage."
With the addition of new drummer JULIEN SOTO, formerly of Cowboys Versus Indians, and bassist BLAINE FILBERT, The Catalyst--which also accounts for RUSTY SCHNEITER, COLT SCHNEITER, and DYLAN FANTAZIA--feels they have delivered an album to follow up 2009''s ''Hey Hollywood, Make Me Beautiful'', that can keep up with the big guns in the music scene. Yet in doing so, experienced an artistic "rebirth".
"I believe i can speak for everyone when i say this is our best work yet", states one of only three original members, DYLAN FANTAZIA. "It has definitely been the most fun writing process we ever had, that''s for sure. With everyone in the band having so many different ideas and styles, we were able to sit down and write something not only our fans would be surprised by, but something that even surprised ourselves." "Something i think that sticks out a lot to me is the fact that we knew it was going to be hard to sit down and write something completely original, but because of that, i think we pushed ourselves to write something that is current, and that is current for us" adds drummer JULIEN SOTO. "I personally was happy with these past 2 months of writing because it''s not just my drum parts, or just Dylan''s guitar parts, or just Rusty''s vocal parts. Everyone in the band can play multiple instruments, and it really worked to our advantage. Any time we were stuck and kinda had that ''now what?'' mood, someone was able to be like, ''well what if we did this?'' or ''lets try doing it this way'' and it really gave each song a dynamic pulse."
Whether it be the commanding opener "Contradiction" - which immediately has your head start to nod up and down to its staggering, heart pounding drums, or the gut-wrenching, fast-paced riffing on "Control" that suddenly drops off and sends your brain into a deep pounding that makes you grit your teeth and clinch your fists, you know you''re not in for a disappointment. But as a collective, the music itself wasn''t the only thing The Catalyst was focused on making memorable.
"On the last album, a lot of the lyrics were about personal experiences that had happened in my life and it was all written by me" says COLT. "With ''Choices'', we wanted to deliver a message as a band, not just as one person writing everything, and i think we did just that. And that''s pretty much were the title of the EP derived from. From the choices you make in every day life to go one way, or the other."
More like MESSAGES. Each song has its own in-your-face "fuck you" to the world. With ''Contradiction'', you get a heavy dose disgust toward hypocritical so called "christians", and hypocrites in general. "Don''t get us wrong, we''re far from atheists or anything like that, we''re just surrounded everyday by the people in this world who put on that act of ''oh i can''t go out and party, it''s against my beliefs'' or preaching that cheating and all that is bad to a certain group of people, but then they are the ones we find a day or two later, drunk or stoned and cheating on their partner." says Julien, clearing the air. Next is the track ''Change'', which talks about how there is is no such thing as a perfect relationship, and how things aren''t how they seem in the movies. "All girls want to do is change you.", laughs COLT. "In movies, everything is so perfect, blah blah blah. No way, you can''t even have a relationship with a girl anymore these days. You shouldn''t have to change who you are for anyone. If that person feels it''s needed, then fuck them."
The third track on the EP, titled ''Control'', deals with the people in the world who try to tell you how to live your life. "We''re always told we need to get real jobs. Screw that. If you''re happy with waking up before sunrise everyday until you''re 65 and not having life, awesome for you. But i''ll pass" smirks Julien. "I refuse to spend life, as short as it is, being unhappy." The last track, titled ''Confide'', ties in with ''Control'' to end out the album. "Coming from a small farm town in Missouri, all we hear about is how we''re wasting our time doing this band, and how it''s never gonna go anywhere, and we just need to get jobs. This song has a positive message to it. We wanted to let people know it was okay to step out of the box and be different for a change. Some people aren''t confident enough to try and be different, and it''s a shame. Hopefully when people hear this song, they will start to think.", says COLT.
"We can''t wait for everyone to hear the finished product. I think it''s going to turn a lot of heads and set us apart from the rest of the ''scene'' around Missouri.", says JULIEN. "We recently added two of the new songs to our live set, just to get some feedback, and so far people have been like ''HOLY CRAP!'', so we''re really excited to get everything released and start playing it full time."
