Joseph Michael Langston was born ( July 5. 1977) in Columbus, Ohio and began singing at the young age of 15. He grew up in nondenominational Christian church. His father, Larry Langston is one of the presiding pastors and the music director. His mother, Greta Langston sings and is an active counselor; retired school teacher. Influenced by his father’s previous professional jazz career (as a drummer), Joseph began to pursue a career in music himself. Unmotivated to sing, he started rapping in church and was recognized at an open mic, during a 40DT concert. Tupac, Jay-Z, Nas and The Roots moved him to want to rock the mic. In the year 2000, he took on the name "Jocef" and began recording. Writing poetry was more of a hobby, until his poetry was put to music. He was influenced by writers such as: Babyface, Brian McKnight, Michael Jackson, and Fred Hammond. He began to open for bands such as 40DT, John Rueben, Cross Culture, and Tha T.R.U.T.H., but was exposed only to a certain genre
