Jill and I were a couple of newbie indie artists, but we knew what we wanted. After leading worship for over two decades, Jill started writing some really great songs. They came from her deep relationship with our Lord Jesus, and it showed. Folks from our church loved them, and so did folks from other churches. Even I liked them. So, in our pride, we were thinking we would be the next Brian Doerkson or Kathryn Scott or something, and we had to record these songs!
Our professional musical buddies advised against recording live for our first album. Recording in the studio would have been much easier. You record one instrument at a time, and if you mess up, you either start over or redo that part. Pretty cool. In Jill''s case, however, an epic element of her music would be missing. She is not a studio musician: she is a worship leader, and something special happens when she leads worship. And there''s why we recorded live--to capture that special something.
So what is that special something? Ahhhh. Well, I am Jill''s husband; so, https://www.tradebit.com me tell you about my wife! The "special something" is many things. Firstly, there is an anointing that flows out of a deep relationship with the Lord Jesus. It can be so soft and intimate that sometimes no words or music are necessary, and it can be so loud and raucous you can hardly believe it''s from the same woman. She knows when to stick to the written song and when to abandon it to follow the flow of the Holy Spirit. And THAT is where things get interesting. In the midst of a Holy Spirit "flow", all manner of fresh, wonderful, intimate, exciting and even bizarre things can can happen. One thing we see on a daily basis, is that the Holy Spirit will "download" an entirely new song, prophetic and spontaneous, and Jill is able to hear it and sing it out as she receives it. She has a gift of being able to sing unscripted, spontaneous worship songs and a gift for singing unscripted, spontaneous prayers, and she has invested years developing those gifts.
Jill recognizes that the Holy Spirit may lead through anyone on her team, or anyone in the congregation at anytime. She recognizes when it''s happening, and she not only allows it, but she encourages it. She teaches it as well. She knows that not just humans but instruments also have voices that can ''speak'' the things of God. She makes room for her musicians to ''speak'' or even lead when the Holy Spirit is upon them. Perhaps her greatest gift is to promote those around her.
On Jill''s debut album, Make My Life a Prayer, we ignored professional advice to record in the studio recorded LIVE instead--to capture the experience of the Holy Spirit as He permeates Jill''s particular style of worship leading. I highly recommend you not use this as background music. Set aside some dedicated worship time (then worship!)
