Details:
Jon Crossen collects vintage guitars, basses, 45’s of obscure bands from the 50’s and 60’s. When he’s playing his vintage black Precision and Golden Gate amp it’s like standing in front of a tidal wave.
Jim Schmidt designs and builds his own saxophones. A former motorcycle racer who modified his Norton Swift into a 320 lb 850cc fire-breathing road racer. Jim placed 2nd at Laguna Seca 750cc Battle of the twins in 1984.
John Shafer is an enigma. He has a house filled with vintage Rodgers drums. In his garage is a sweet Triumph Bonneville that’s an ever-evolving platform of “cafe“ inspired modifications.
Jay Van Horn went direct to disk via Hughs and Kettner Blues Master preamp. using a ‘91- ‘57 reissue Fender Stratocaster. Jay is the master of rhythm and chief “bartender“ of the tropical whammy bar. Without his tireless effort and dedication, this disk would never seen the light of day.
Tom Walzem Recorded with a 1964 Fender Deluxe Reverb (w/Jensen C12N), and direct with the Blues Master, using a recent Fender Stratocaster (w/Seymour Duncan Vintage Staggered Pickups), a vintage 1960 Les Paul Special double cutaway (used on Dame Anushka, T minus 5), a 2004 Santa Cruz Vintage Jumbo acoustic, and‘64 Tiesco 4SSL
The fuzz solo on Surfcoaster, and all the garbled electric sounds on that song are from a vintage Fender Blender pedal recorded with a 1964 Tiesco 4SSL. The Beginning sounds were made by yelling into the pickups. The solo was recorded to a completely different version of the song and imported into the new tracks.
Recorded by: Jerry Leal - Pyramid Recording, Fresno, Peter Wolf - Wolfsound Fresno, and Tyson J Van Horn, The House Plant. Mixed and Mastered at: The House Plant – Fresno, CA. Engineer: Tyson J Van Horn. Special Thanks to: Ray Haney of AR Studios Fresno, CA, Bob Lentini of SAWStudio / RML Labs and TraderJoe’s Coffee.
We want to thank a whole lot of people. Brian “Surf” Kelly whose encouragement, beer and donations have been very helpful to the completion of this disk. Tomy and Toshi of Tokyo Gardens. TG Soy Sauce, Michael Simmons at Fretboard Journal Magazine, of course, Dave Cole of Backline Repair All our friends in the instrumental surf world, Jeff Hanson “Big Tiki Dude“, Ferenc Dobronyi, Linda Miller of the Huntington Beach International Surf Museum, Phil Dirt, webmaster Brian and all the maniacs of https://www.tradebit.com.
This album is dedicated to the spirit of automobile racer Milt Minter. Winner of Porsches most aggressive driver award in 1973, Milter drove Can-Am, Trans-Am, IMSA, SCCA, at Le Mans, historic races and even in the Baja 1000! Sanger native Milt Minter kicked ass.
