“A Journey Through Light & Shadow” is a crossroad of sorts. Several roads converged together in order to see this CD come to fruition.
The lessons learned and experience gained from recording and mixing my previous CDs (“Range of Motion” and “Drums Along The Wasatch”) established a solid course to follow, and they were greatly aided by the addition of a new microphone to better capture the sound along the way.
My technique and my skill on the drums continue to improve, and they provide a firm foundation upon which to sustain this Journey, as well as the confidence to explore and record new instruments like the bodhran and the guitar.
The inspiration and understanding of the theme that underlies this particular Journey sparked the words and insights used to describe each piece of music on the CD. Rather than stand-alone songs brought together into one collection, each piece on this CD is connected to one another. The music itself tells the tale, but the CD insert contains specific details of the story to help augment the experience of the Journey and to provide a map or journal to help us to the crossroad.
Better production values like professionally produced graphic materials and professionally duplicated CDs add a higher level of finish to the CD and raise it up a few notches from my earlier, slightly more amateur, efforts.
“A Journey Through Light & Shadow” tells the tale of the Hunter’s Journey. This tale is not about the Hero, for this is a middle tale. The heroic idealism of youthful tales gives way to the uncertainty and many shades of gray found in the middle years of life. It challenges the Hunter to strip away his illusions and see himself for what he is. All this is done through song and sound and word and rhythm. In the end, we must each find our own source of solace within the truths that we discover.
As with my previous CDs, all of the instruments used are acoustic. I use no electric keyboards, synthesizers, sound samples or drum machines in my recordings. This allows the music to maintain a more organic feel. The music is more alive and spontaneous, especially since most of the music on this CD was improvised.
The instrumentation on this CD includes: congas, djembe, clay doumbek, mini-clay doumbek, my "big drum," bodhran, African slit drum, gong, rain stick, shaker egg, soprano recorder, alto recorder, tenor recorder, voice, vocalizations and guitar.
If you have ever danced to the drums around a campfire or meditated to the pulse of a drum, then I think you will enjoy my music.
I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed making it.

Windwood lives, works and plays in the great state of Utah. He is a lover of music and rhythms. Windwood is now an initiate on the Bardic Path and continues to explore just what that means… He loves good food, good family, good friends and good times, and he loves to drum and sing around a campfire.
