Much of the album was inspired by beautiful British Columbia, and in particular by Chesterman Beach, which is a part of Long Beach stretching from south to north on the western shore of Vancouver Island, British Columbia.
The first composition, Starfish, is a three-part composition featuring e-piano, synth, violin, guitar, and bass. The harmonies are mostly built around a single "drone" bass note, D. There is a short, somewhat nostalgic violin theme in the second part.
The second composition, Winter on Chesterman Beach, is a piano ballad, for piano, synth, and drums. Rich jazz chords in the beginning, a classical-style romantic ending with a stepping-down bass note and alternating major and minor chords.
The third composition, Pacific Sunrise, is an experiment - we used a classical violin sound on the background of convoluted, involved jazz harmony played by the rhodes. Yours to judge.
The fourth composition, Dakini Dream, is another piano ballad (actually composed in 2009), again with down-sliding, strange-sounding major-minor harmonies. Piano, drums, and an electric bass.
The fifth composition, Something About You, is a romantic ballad composed in classical style. Violin, grand piano, "whooshing" synth, and acoustic bass.
The sixth composition, Medieval Blues, is another experiment of ours - blues-style e-piano playing over a Baroque-style harmony. E-piano and drums; a floating bass is "summoned" by the other instruments at the end of the composition.
The seventh composition, Memories Past, is a Slavic-style ballad for guitar and violin. For those of you wondering about strange-sounding guitar, this is a hybrid electric-acoustic Taylor guitar.
The eighth composition, We Aren''t Grass, We Aren''t Ash, is a rock ballad. The words and the tune of this composition came to the composer in a dream. We tried to preserve that "dream-like" quality in the composition. Organ, bass, acoustic and electric guitars, and violin at the end. "Will try to play in twos now" - that''s what the violinist is heard saying before playing her part (referring to two notes played per bow). We thought that sounded interesting, so we left it in.
Finally, the ninth composition, Epilogue, is a live studio improvisation using the harmony of the first composition, Starfish. The composer has been encouraged to sing in this one through a voice harmonizer module connected to his keyboard.
Oleg Bouevitch, the composer, plays piano, e-piano, organ, and guitars. Vlada Chametka, a professional classical violinist, plays violin. Mikhail Rykov, guitarist, joins us for live performances and is recorded in the tune #9. Oleg Joukov, the drummer, has many years of experience playing rock in countless South Urals pubs and clubs.
