I was playing a coffeeshop in the little Iron Range town of Aurora, MN a couple years ago and this older woman was watching my set intently- like really paying attention. She came up to me at set break and said how perfectly the songs matched the area and told me about how her husband used to write country/folk songs and had made a couple tapes, but he was since deceased. That really stuck with me, and I always wondered what this guy would have sounded like, and it kind of got to be an obsession; this absolute unknown songwriter from the back woods of the range, forever silenced. We know that ONE guy that came from that one Hibbing place in a similar time and place…but this fella was intriguing, as no one had ever really heard of him. So I was working on this song a while ago: ”Turpentine and Lye” in which the protagonist’s wife kills him by slipping him a cup o’ turpentine and lye instead of his nightly drink. And it hit me, the image that could have easily been his tune…Thus was born ‘Elem Baxter,’ and that song and the others as they developed have been staples of the live sets for some time now. I wanted the recordings to sound loose, like an unearthed lost session recorded in a Church basement in the early 60''s. I imagined the band would be a bunch of crafty old vets. Put these recordings together quietly over the past 18 months in the confines of my 1896 attic, trying not to think of who would listen, but who’d never be able to. I loved working on the record and am real grateful to the folks who played on it.
