El Vuh is a hip hop trio out of Los Angeles, California whose name is derived from the Spanish (El) and Mayan (Vuh) languages meaning “The Book”. Lyricists Zero, Victor-E & E-Rise began their musical career in 2002 and have since become recognized as lyrical medicine men expressing their views on the today’s environmental, economic, social and political climates as the planet draws closer to the year 2012. Dec. 21st, 2012 is the Mayan prophecy said to be the end of the world, “but in fact it’s just the start of a new cycle said to bring forth a new world view”, says El Vuh. Basing their lyrics on the philosophy of their native Aztec & Mayan ancestry, El Vuh reminds us that not only are we all part of the circle of life, but we also have a responsibility to that circle.
El Vuh understands that life is one big vibration, so what better way to effect the world but through their vibe in the form of hip hop music. During live performances, they incorporate the sounds of ancient Mexico into their set with an indigenous orchestra as well as danzantes (Aztec Dancers), all in front of a backdrop of native imagery. This whole experience runs fluidly with the positive message that El Vuh brings and immediately distinguishes them from any hip hop group out today.
El Vuh has performed abroad in Canada and Mexico appearing at several global festivals and will soon be performing in Europe. They have shared the stage with the legendary KRS-One and such hip hop heavyweights as Immortal Technique, Dj Muggs & Sick Jacken. El Vuh has appeared on national television shows Latin Nation (ABC), The Roof (Mun2) and En Contexto (Telemundo) and has been featured on major websites such as Billboard En Espanol, AOL Latino and Terra, based out of Mexico City. The Associated Press of Latin America most recently interviewed them wanting to gain insight into their unique world view and message.
With the global community in its increasingly dependent state, El Vuh refreshingly brings forth a message of love and hope through deep understanding of their ancient ancestral teachings. “We feel that Ometeotl (the Aztec God of duality) is gentle and loving, and if we all start to want a different world then we all will start to work towards it”, says Zero. “The Aztecs built a city in the middle of a lake with no modern technology and did not disturb the ecosystem of that region. That’s not easy to do”, says Victor-e. “Anything is possible if we put our minds to it. Nothing is impossible. The power of the mind and heart with good intent can heal anything”, says E-rise. El Vuh invites everyone to be active participants in the changes that are now taking place, as prophecied by the Maya, in preparation for 2012.
