Having already developed a reputation as a producer and mastering engineer, lending his skills to up-and-coming artists like Empty, Pask, and Lucidstatic, as well as remixing such luminaries of the industrial scene as Chemlab and Pigface, Chris Cozort finally releases his first solo album as Iammynewt (not counting the Ohaka release in collaboration with Skullduggery). Featuring remixes by several of the underground music scene’s rising stars in the realm of post-industrial, Altercation puts together some of the finest talents to be found today as styles ranging from glitch-laden IDM to pulse-pounding drum & bass are put on display. Who knew that three songs could present so many sonic and musical possibilities?
Iammynewt’s music is difficult to pin down by itself – a wide range of influences can be heard, from the deceptive simplicity of Kraftwerk to the frenetic beats of Dieselboy to the introspective atmospheres of Autechre. When combined with the talents of his fellow underground up-and-comers, whatever your electronic fix need be, Altercation provides in spades. From the gyrating bass and grating synth of Defrag’s remix of “Egor” to the caustic hip-hop edginess of Cyanotic’s remix of “LOUsid,” Altercation takes the listener into virtually all forms of experimental electronic music with each track meshing seamlessly together into a cohesive package that can’t be ignored or denied. Abrasive glitches mesh with infectious bass in Torrent Vaccine’s remix of “back UP” while Empty blend lush melodic ambience with heart-stopping drum & bass.
There’s no way to pigeonhole Altercation into any category other than “good electronic music.” If you’re looking for what’s new and fresh in the underground music scene today, Altercation will more than satisfy while also leaving you with just enough anticipation for what is yet to come from Chris Cozort.
