Details:
In July 2007, Anima - Young Singers of Greater Chicago traveled to South Africa. The trip was full of musical, cultural and humanitarian experiences never to be forgotten. Most of the performances are taken from the final concert, shared with the Pro Cantu Youth Choir (Leon Starker, conductor) in Cape Town. The Zulu and Xhosa pieces are performed with the traditional movements, resulting in the sound of stepping, stomping, etc. "Ithemba lami" (I ascend with faith and enter with praise), "Nginesi ponono" (I have a sweetheart who comes from Durbin), "Senzenina" (often sung at funerals), "Unonkala" (Mr. Crab walks down by the river - Mr. Crab walks like a crab!), and "Bawo Thixo Somandia" (Father, what is my transgression? What wrong have we done you that we kill each other like this! May this cup pass from us) are all traditional songs from various regions of South Africa.
