HOW THE JOURNEY BEGAN
Often I''m asked what inspired me to write Journey. Most people expect to hear a complicated answer, followed by a stream of events that occurred in my life, when in actuality the answer is quite simple. The Spirit, simply the Spirit.

Although Journey was the very first song I had ever produced, it wasn''t intended to be my first album. At the time I wrote the song Journey, the music industry was in a totally different place. Rap and Hip-Hop music were just emerging as mainstream music. People were debating on whether or not it was a fad, and radicals like the group N.W.A., Ice T, and Too Short, were becoming an icon to the inner city youth. Rock was still strong, and Pop was taking a turn for the worse, and in all of this, there was nothing that remotely sounded like Journey. I had no idea where my place would be in all of this with a song like Journey. Like most artists and musicians, there was almost nothing more I wanted in life than to share my music with the world, but I was uncertain if Journey would be a good start. Not because I didn''t care for the song. It moved me like no other song I had ever written, but I wasn''t sure the rest of the world would receive it with such open arms, and after the work I had done with so many other artists, many were eager to see what my own project would sound like. I felt as if I were under a microscope, and the bottom line was, I only had one chance to prove myself to the industry I remember when I wrote Journey as if it were only moments ago. At the time I didn''t really have any equipment at all. All I had was a Yamaha QY10. It was a little pocket size keyboard/sequencer/drum machine. The sounds weren''t all that great, but that little thing was almost my best friend. I took it with me everywhere I went. Before I wrote Journey, I had been doing a lot of writing for a number of other recording artist, and all though the music was nice and the songs did well, they really weren''t an expression of me. They were written for someone else and they catered to that artist''s sound and style. When I decided to begin writing music for my own album I first went into a state of meditation. I prayed for guidance and inspiration from God. I wanted what ever I created to house His incredible spirit and to be something that would touch and bless others the way he had touched and blessed me. As I sat down to my miniature keyboard, with no more then 20 keys that weren''t really keys at all, but instead little 1/2 in. squares that represented the keys on a keyboard, I imagined I was listening to the radio. And as I listened I began to hear this soft, beautiful music, but it played so faint I could barely make it out. So I began to listen harder to understand the song. The harder I listened, the further away it went. I began to follow the music and as I followed, further and further away it began to lead me. I had no idea were I was going, but I knew I had to follow, and then it happened. The sound began to amplify and the song was becoming more clear. I remember my heart pounding with anticipation and the feeling of becoming overwhelmed. I began to visualize the song, not mentally as some might think, but I actually saw this song as if it were a real place. I saw a beautiful and powerful ocean absorbing strength from the wind. I felt the sand between my toes and I smelled the sweetness of life in the air. The breeze was so perfect and the sun shown bright. And all the while, the music still played, and then it, the music, took form. It began to lead me from that place of creation to a path of existence, and when my journey had ended, there before me was this song, "Journey, The Story of Life". I''ve never proclaimed my self to be a gospel song writer, nor would I classify Journey as a gospel song, but I will say that it was inspired by the Spirit of God.
