Dormitory Effect is an all-female Metal band out of New York. This veteran four-piece have been impressing audiences across the country with their strong musicianship, memorable songs, pummeling live shows and unapologetic take-no-crap attitude. In 2005, their first release, an EP titled "Wealth of the Disease" was only supposed to be a quickie job to help them land some gigs. However, it hit hard and showed that these ladies had the goods. It was so popular in the underground that the band sold out of it''s original 1,000 copy pressing and had to scramble to produce more on their own in small batches.
"Wealth of the Disease" had more legs than anyone could have imagined. That was a good thing, since DE were so busy that before everyone knew it, four years had passed. Anxious to get some new material out for the many fans who were demanding it, they set out to record new music. 2009 saw them hard at work in Hole In The Ground Studios on Long Island with Alex Myree at the helm. Delays kept them getting it completed that year, but finally this new music, under the title "About Time..." is ready to be unleashed.
While Dormitory Effect achieved many milestones such as being the 2nd highest-draw at the Seattle''s 2005 Rockrgrl Festival standout at NXNE and appearances on comedian Jim Breuer''s satellite radio show among other accomplishments, they knew that they still had a lot to prove. With the exception of one song, the songs on "Wealth" were already a few years old when they recorded them back in 2005. While they love those songs, they weren''t totally representative of the band as writers and did not fully represent the sonic heaviness the ladies bring live.
For those who may have doubted the musical capability of the women of Dormitory Effect, "About Time..." will certainly cement them as the real deal. While fellow NY music lifers like Dan Nelson (ex-Anthrax) made guest appearances, "About Time..." is the closest the listener can get to seeing Dormitory Effect in person. No ProTools, no "studio magic", no excessive fluff. Guitar, drums, bass and throat played - as always - with intensity, groove, feeling and conviction.
Bassist Urith Myree, who co-produced "About Time..." states, "being women and scene veterans, we are all too familiar with the lack of faith in and little regard for all-female Metal acts and females in hard music in general. There are people that will never believe we write and play our instruments at the level we do. We''re not, ''good for a bunch of chicks''; we''re good, period. We can hold our own with anyone. So with this recording, we wanted to get great sounds, but we didn''t want it to sound ''slick'' or artificial. We wanted to keep it as "live" as possible in order to try and capture the punch of our live performances...so while we''re aware of how most Metal recordings sound now, that''s not what we sound like, and we didn''t want to try and misrepresent ourselves or add elements we couldn''t reproduce live musically. You may hear a crackle or buzz now and then, but those were natural, and we didn''t feel the need to clean up every little bit. This is us."
And the songs themselves? Heavier. More complex. Their thoughtful lyrics go even deeper, and the production is big, full and clear. From the thrash-tinged "Minimum Wage" that opens the CD with bombast, to Susan''s emotional performance in the moody "To Belong", to the studio version of the crowd-favorite "Crawler" and the well-developed swagger of "Regarding Your Daughter", Dormitory Effect put their hearts on their sleeve and laid it all out on the floor of the studio as they do on the stage.
Still together, stronger and better than ever, Dormitory Effect is back with a vengeance.
