Marked by many for stardom, Baton Rouge based We Landed on the Moon! blasts through complex issues of conflict, love and loss with the aplomb of a rocket igniting into the night sky. With a knack for marking explosiveness with introspection, the quintet’s self-titled debut WE LANDED ON THE MOON! resonates with catchy hooks and distinct sonic styling, led by the powerful yet vulnerable vocals of sultry lead singer Melissa Eccles.
And to think that the whole voyage started with a Broken Lizard, a Jackass, and Daisy Duke herself.
To give you a better idea of the beginnings of We Landed on the Moon!, we need only take you back to a chilly Wednesday night in 2005 when Jay Chandrasekhar, director of the movie Dukes of Hazard (equally well-known as the mustachioed Ramathorn from Super Troopers), spotted singer Melissa Eccles playing her weekly gig at a crowded Baton Rouge bar. At the urging of Chandrasekhar, within weeks the entire cast of the Dukes of Hazard was making the Wednesday shows, including stars Jessica Simpson and Johnny Knoxville. Before too long, Chandrasekhar upped the ante, asking Eccles to produce a song to be placed on the Duke’s soundtrack.
Eccles immediately asked for a little help from her friends, guitarist/keyboardist John Lambremont and guitarist Brad Ourso. Rushed into production, the three-some banged out three songs in Lambremont’s tiny bedroom which became known as THE KILL RALPHIE EP.
“I remember knowing immediately that we had something”, said Lambremont about the first writing sessions. “We wanted to sound more like Blondie and Kate Bush, that 70’s NY/UK dynamic but mixed with something more current like Radiohead or Arcade Fire”
With Eccles voice as the bedrock foundation of the band, and pushed by the timeline given for the soundtrack, the trio auditioned a series of musicians to get the ship off the ground. Though the trio’s rock songs ended up being a bad fit for the country feel of the Dukes soundtrack, the brush with success and continued support and contact with the Dukes’ cast lit a fire under the fledgling group. Writing songs and performing locally under the name The Ohms, the band underwent a few lineup changes, before adding Ryan Rushing (drums), Stephen Bowling (bass) and Jonathan Kolich (guitar) but losing Ourso to dreams of rock stardom in LA.
Now known as We Landed on the Moon!- a handle assumed after a sarcastic response from Bowling to Lambremont during a spirited band discussion, the five piece began to gig regionally and develop the aural trademark for which the band is quickly becoming known. The fantastic response at shows and new moniker of “official band of https://www.tradebit.com,” a LSU sports related website garnering over 6 million hits a month, injected the courage needed for the band to take the next step forward into the studio, as the new music and lineup was greeted with great fanfare and rewarded with placement on KLSU/The Legacy’s first Mixtape.
With the launch of their debut album, the band is beginning to capitalize on its hard work, earning larger shows and a rabid fanbase, including blowout shows with pop idol Ryan Cabrera at the Dixie Landing and a Music Cares benefit by Grammy Winner Greg Ladanyi at the Varsity Theatre in June. A national tour is planned for August, including a national radio campaign, with hopes of signing with a record label close on the horizon.
If WE LANDED ON THE MOON! is any indication, the album will mark the next of many small steps for this band, and many giant leaps for band-kind.
