Details:
Tom Chapin’s new recording, The Turning Of The Tide, represents a leap forward and a look back by one of America’s best songwriters and live performers. These twelve strong, personal songs of love, family, birth, life, death, and peace are written and sung with great passion and integrity. They feature Tom’s trademarks: great writing, beautiful arrangements, superb musicianship, musical heights and emotional depths.

For more than 30 years and 19 compact discs, this three time Grammy® award-winner has dazzled audiences with his remarkable musicianship, superb songwriting, personal warmth and good humor. The New York Times calls Tom Chapin “one of the great personalities in contemporary folk music.”

Tom writes:

“Dear Friends,

I’m proud of this new record and these 12 grownup song-tales about memories, emotional journeys and encounters I’ve had. Some songs I’ve been singing for a while, while others are brand new. All but one were written with my friends, and recorded with my dream band: Jon Cobert, Michael Mark, Eric Weissberg, Larry Campbell and Allan Schwartzberg, aided by engineer and guitarist John Guth. Plus some special backup vocals by my magical singing daughters, The Chapin Sisters: Abigail, Lily and Jessica.

I am blessed with friends and collaborators who inspire me, and help me invent in ways that I would never come to by myself.
~ Written with Si Kahn:
Distant Drummer is our version of a true story my Dad tells, a story that starts with Civil War drummer boys, goes on through Gene Krupa, Sanford Moeller and ends with legendary drum teacher Jim Chapin himself.
Lamentation was written upon the sudden death of my beloved eldest brother James Burke Chapin, and celebrates our late singer/humanitarian brother Harry Forster Chapin as well.

~ Written with John McCutcheon & Michael Mark:
Follow The Light was written the week of September 11, 2001 at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas. The evening of the day we wrote it we sang it for 20,000 people who were all New Yorkers that night.
John and Michael share lead vocals with me.

~ Written with John Forster:
Big Love and The Turning Of The Tide are new ballads about the rhythms of intimate and long-term relationships.

~ Written with George S. Clinton:
Hearts On The Road. “Hello, I’m leaving” describes my life. I’ve had this tune for 20 some years and finally got the lyric where I wanted it.

~ Written with Jon Cobert, who invents such great melodies to lyrics that I send him:
My Mother’s Quiet Eyes is a tribute to the unsung heroine of the boisterous Chapin brothers.
Miles & Miles celebrates the birth of my first grandson, Miles Earl Craven, with a nod and thanks to Robert Frost.
At The End Of The Day was composed on one of those bittersweet New Years Eves when I found myself looking ahead and behind.
I’ve Forgotten asks that nagging question, who’s in charge here?
Sing For Peace. “Peace is how we’ll turn the world around.”

And a song I adore that was written by two famous folk icons who I''ve learned much from, Tom Paxton and Bob Gibson:
And Loving You in which I’m playing Bob’s unique banjo accompaniment.

Listen. Enjoy. Pass the music on.”
