MEET TIM NEWTON

A lot of people write books about their lives. Others let someone write it for them. A songwriter will put the words to his life in music…one song here, one song there. Rare is the writer/singer who wraps his whole life (and maybe yours?) into several songs on one CD!

Meet Tim Newton who has done just that with his newest CD after a long sabbatical that took him from Birmingham to Memphis to Atlanta and even the tiny island of Saba in the Caribbean; finally to Nashville where he now resides and has written and recorded since 1989. With his music you have to dig deeper than the soulful voice, the wonderful pickers – who Tim affectionately calls “The Slagpile Soul Band” – and look beyond the strong vocals that, obviously, come from ‘center-heart’. Complicated? Not really…all you have to do is to listen to the words of this powerful music to know this is a road…years of life and song in a single project, appropriately titled “Somewhere Down The Road (…Is Right In Front Of Your Eyes)”, an array of stories about dreams realized, dreams failed, love, hope, tears, fears, and laughter.

Tim Newton was born in Leeds, Alabama December 22nd “a long, long time ago”. His father was a coal miner/trucker who – in Tim’s words – “couldn’t sing a lick and had the rhythm of a rock”. But his mom’s beautiful alto voice - along with the wonderful musical talents of her piano playing mother and gospel singing father - provided the heritage to serve as the catalyst for Tim’s God given gift of voice.

A huge fan of writer/artists (in that order) Newton has shared the stage with Guy Clark, the late Townes Van Zandt, Fred Koller, Steve Young, and has shared playbills with Delbert McClinton, Rodney Crowell, Linda Hargrove, Larry Jon Wilson, and many others. The late Mickey Newbury and Roy Orbison were huge influences on Tim’s writing and vocal style and Doug Gray, John Cowan, and Jackie Wilson are also listed as champions of his trade!

From the vocal and bass guitar front of the title track to the ‘let’s-tear-the-house-down’ vocals (and band) on “Gonna Lose These Blues”, this record is a wonderful journey…moving at Tim''s own pace (he also produced the record). Remember it’s the journey, not the destination. So kick back, kick up, kick low, kick high…just kick and Timbocephus will see ya “Somewhere Down The Road”. After all “Somewhere Down The Road…Is Right In Front Of Your Eyes!”
