CLASSICAL: Contemporary, CLASSICAL: Traditional

Details:
Musical passion arrives to us all in different ways. When guitarists Brett Parnell and Geremy Schulick met at the Yale School of Music they discovered a shared passion for Bach. It seemed natural to form a duo and follow their muse along the classical genre track. “As most curious music fans do,” recalls Parnell, “I purchased a best of Bach CD. The classical guitar track on it excited me so much that the next morning I woke up and decided immediately to start growing out my nails so I could play it.” But neither was ready to abandon their rock upbringing which they’ve so embraced and continues to have a profound influence on their playing. Schulick states, “We came to love classical pieces on our own, and we studied them in the same way we devotedly learned our favorite rock tunes as teenagers. We were not raised practicing classical music after school under the watchful eyes of our parents. We think that classical music and rock music are very similar at their core, so we try to make that come across in our playing.” This evolution is most clearly apparent in some of their own compositions, such as Schulick''s driving "Moving On," and in their arrangements of contemporary rock songs including Coldplay''s "Fix You." It is also evident in their fervent approach to more "classical" repertoire, such as their arrangements of keyboard works by Bach and Domenico Scarlatti. threefifty duo even flirts with pop culture references with their arrangement of music from Super Mario Brothers, “Music from the Mushroom Kingdom,” a must listen for anyone who ever played Nintendo. Since their inception threefifty duo has become recognized for eclectic programming and emotionally charged performances. The pair is committed to expanding the classical guitar''s audience and repertoire.

Both members live in New York City and have performed at a variety of venues including The 92nd Street Y Street Fair, The Monkey, the 2006 Seriously Strings concert series through the Julia Music Performing Arts School, and a Yale tribute concert for their mentor, Benjamin Verdery, where they were hailed by The New Haven Independent as "bad to the bone."
