Juxtaposing disparate musical genres into large-scale compositional architectures realized entirely through free improvisation, performances by the Christopher Adler Trio takes listeners on emotional and spiritual journeys like none other. Weaving together American free jazz and European free improvisation, minimalist and ambient textures, funk and hip-hop, punk and bebop, the Trio''s music is unified by its members'' commitment to the spiritual power of musical experience and to constantly challenging their own musical boundaries. The Trio has appeared in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Santa Cruz and throughout San Diego and is famous for their 2-year run of weekly performances at Galoka. This recording captures a particularly magical performance at the Los Angeles Harbor College, where energetic flights of virtuoso improvisation met austere simplicity and all the musicians were at their best.
Christopher Adler Christopher Adler is a composer, improviser and performer living in San Diego, California. His compositions draw upon over a decade of research into the traditional musics of Thailand and Laos and a background in mathematics and computer modeling. As a pianist and conductor, he has performed with many of the West coast''s finest improvisers, including Gustavo Aguilar, Michael Vlatkovich, Christopher Garcia, Vinny Golia, George Lewis and Anthony Davis, and he performs contemporary solo and ensemble repertoire and is the pianist for the San Diego New Music resident ensemble NOISE. He received Ph.D. and Master''s degrees in composition from Duke University and Bachelor''s degrees in music composition and in mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and he is currently Director of the Music Program and an Assistant Professor at the University of San Diego. His work may be heard on Tzadik, 9 Winds Records, Artship Recordings, and WGBH''s Art of the States.
Alan Lechusza, performer, composer and Ph.D. candidate in UCSD''s Critical Studies and Experimental Practices program, brings a subtle control over timbre, multiphonics, extended techniques, and a boundless melodic inventiveness to a comprehensive arsenal of wind instruments. He plays with such highly recognized ensembles as The Vinny Golia Large Ensemble, Michael Vlatkovich ensembles, Quartteto Nuevo, and the Aulos Saxophone Quartet and has performed with James Newton, Kai Akagi, Charles Owens, Dr. Art Davis, Billy Higgins, George Lewis, Anthony Davis, George Harper, William Roper, Jack Reidling, Leo Potts, and Sherman Ferguson. Lechusza''s compositions have been commissioned and performed by Charles Owens, Leo Potts, Tany Ling, Jack Reidling and many others.
Vikas Srivastava presents drumming as a polyrhythmic force of rumbling currents rooted in Indian traditions and modern jazz philosophy. He combines the experiences of prayer through cyclical beats as practiced in the temples with cutting edge improvisation gained through his studies with James R. Cheatham. Srivastava is currently co-owner and operator of Galoka Restaurant, Jazz Scene and Art Gallery, San Diego''s newest and most vital venue for cutting-edge music.
