Details:
“White Squares” is pure autobiography. I’m a novelist and teach fiction writing at Central Connecticut State University, and was flying to an AWP writers’ conference in Vancouver. I looked down and saw “cheerful checks of snow six miles below” in the Canadian forests. What’s that about? Then the truth cut through my naiveté: those are clear-cuts. Suddenly the pretty white squares became instead a sort of mutant checkerboard. They looked good from way up here, at least when covered with snow, but on the ground the land would be desolate.

The song is about how beauty is often sacrificed on the altar of money. White squares are a metaphor for how that happens everywhere, not just in remote Canadian forests. For too many people, dollars are more beautiful than nature. Those of us who don’t agree need to be aware and struggle to retain nature’s beauty, because it is so quickly destroyed to create profits for a few.
