Truly Carmichael taught herself to play the Celtic harp in order to accompany the type of vocal music she sings
around campfires and music circles. Alhough the 32-string Dusty Strings harp she wields is much heavier than
a lute or vihuela, it is lighter then the instrument on which she is actually trained, the piano. She often
jokes that she plays the harp the way a pianist would play the guitar, and finds that only trained harpists get
offended by her very individual style. She frequently joins in Irish circles and represents herself equally well
at a Filk convention or a Ceilidh, happily following funny original songs with traditional jigs and reels.
Her specialty, if truth be told, is the saddest possible music on the planet. Many of her original songs fall
into the little known category of "Songs to slit your wrist by". When she is asked to sing "that really really SAD one
that you wrote" she always has to ask for further clarification on WHICH song is actually being requested.
