HIP HOP/RAP: Hip Hop, HIP HOP/RAP: Rap
Zuby is an anomaly. When someone thinks about the University of Oxford, the first images that spring to mind most likely are of dreaming spires and gown wearing academics on bikes…but not hip hop. Introducing Zuby, a rapping prodigy with the talent, skill and determination to change that. “I’m gonna make it one way or another. Just watch.” Definitely self-confident but somehow humble at the same time, his music is just a reflection of the deeper personality that is Zuby.
Born in England in 1986, Zuby (full name Nzube Udezue) grew up in Saudi Arabia where he attended an American school and began to develop artistically, through drawing and playing piano. But it was during his boarding school years in the UK that hip hop became a passion. “I can’t go a day without listening to hip hop, I’ve got over 250 albums,” says the rapper who despite his age, comes across considerably more mature, both in appearance and mindset. Excelling in school, Zuby earned a place at the prestigious University of Oxford, where he is currently an undergraduate.
Sitting bored in an airport lounge in December 2004, Zuby wrote his first rap. Since then, he has amazed live crowds in the UK and Saudi Arabia, received airplay on BBC radio and in Oxford’s nightclubs and successfully self-released his first EP ‘Commercial Underground’, generating rave reviews along the way. Always looking to improve and to be heard, the young artist has decided that nothing is going to stop him from fulfilling his potential in the music industry. He’s only been rapping for a relatively short time but listening to his multi-syllabic bars, lyrical sharpness and impressive flow, you’d be forgiven for not knowing that. “Everyone is an influence to me. I can’t just listen to hip-hop anymore, I essentially study it.” With his characteristic deep voice and unique international sound, Zuby stands out from the crowd in the UK music scene.
With a different background from the average rapper, Zuby’s subject matter is also a shock to the system. A lot of rappers say it, but Zuby really does keep it real. “I don’t pretend that I’ve done or been through things that I haven’t. I do try to express myself and make entertaining, positive music. God has blessed me all my life and I want to be successful so that I can help the people who need it. That’s the dream that keeps me going.”
‘Cuz what good is it to me if I rock expensive jewellery/ but don’t make life better for the little boys and girls?’
