Details:
Broadway veteran composer Henry Krieger (Grammy winner, Tony and Oscar Award Nominee) teams up with librettist Susan J. Vitucci in this delightful romp through the life and loves of La Pulcina Piccola, Chicken Little, that is. Sung in Italian, Love''s Fowl is a rich helping of the human -- chicken -- comedy; a picaresque tale of mass murder, crime passionel, a sensational trial, tragic love, liaisons dangereuses, show business, shipwreck on the high seas, adventure on the lone prairie, and an excursion into the spirit world beyond the grave. Visit La Pulcina Piccola''s fan website at https://www.tradebit.com

The New York Times calls Love''s Fowl, “...wacky and wise, melodic and mischievous... simultaneously silly and smart” with a "canny and clever libretto and sprightly music."

This American Life says, “Chicken Little, star of an opera performed with dressed-up Styrofoam balls, sung in Italian, which makes grown men cry.”

“Splendidly Funny” (New Yorker)

“Genuine, warm, generous, unironic, lighthearted, wittily crafted humor. O, happy day!” (The Oragonian)

COMPANY:
We are the Clothespin Repertory Theatre!
We celebrate the memory
Of our sweet friend
Her name was Chickie Little

We offer this
Affectionate tribute
To our dearly departed friend.
We tell stories
About Chickie Little

One fine day
A tiny acorn fell.
In that moment
The great career began

Chickie little
The fluffy little heroine
Moved from the barnyard
Into history

Which came first,
The chicken or the egg?
We''ll never know
But we do know that
Our heroine''s life
Began with an egg

Chickie little
The fluffy little heroine
Moved from the barnyard
Into history
And now
We have the pleasure
To present
The show!

(Company exits.)

03 - Sono una Pulcina

LA PULCINA PICCOLA:
Sono una pulcina
E mi preparo per l''amore
Il mio cuor'' è cosi fragile
Com''è il uovo dov''è sono nata

Dunque trattami con gentilezza
Anch''io ti tratterò
Insieme dall''amore terreno
Noi giungeremo al amore divino

Sono una pulcina
E non volo senz'' amore
Il mio cuor'' è cosi forte
Com''è il uovo dov''è sono nata

Dunque mettimi alla prova
Anch''io ti provero
Insieme dall''amore terreno
Noi giungeremo al amore divino.

________________

CHICKEN LITTLE:
I am a young chick
And ready for love.
My heart is as fragile
As the egg from which I was born

Treat me gently
And so will I treat you;
Together from earthly love
We will reach for the divine

I am a young chick
And I can''t fly without love.
My heart is as strong as the egg from which I was born

Put me to the test
And so will I test you
Together from earthly love,
We will reach for the divine

(La Pulcina Piccola sets her heart upon the banty rooster from her home barnyard.)

04 – Amore cos''è questo?

LA PULCINA PICCOLA:
Amore, cos''è questo?

Un amico familiare,
Simpatico, gentile
Siamo I primi amanti
Il nostro amore vivra sempre.
È sempre il primo;
È sempre nuovo.
È sempre per sempre
E sei sempre tu.
Sei sempre tu.

CHICKEN LITTLE
Oh, Mr. Red Fox,
have you heard?
Everyone knows,
the sky is falling!
The sky is falling,
I felt it on my head!
We''re going to tell the king!

MR. RED FOX
...To the king?
...The sky?
Ah...
What a good idea
Dear friends, what a good idea.
I would like to come along.

CHICKEN LITTLE
Yes, certainly,
Mr. Red Fox
Join us, Mr. Red Fox
Let''s go, friends, let''s go to king

THE POULTRY
Let''s go, let''s go!
Let''s go tell the king!

MR. RED FOX
Friends, dear friends,
It is a long journey.
Allow me to suggest...
Aren''t you hungry?
Before we depart,
Wouldn''t you like to come into my little kitchen?
Life is short, let''s enjoy the journey
Come on into my little kitchen.

THE POULTRY
Life is short.
Let''s enjoy the journey
Let''s go
Into your little kitchen

CHICKEN LITTLE
Mr. Red fox,
You are most generous...
Kind and generous
Mr. Red Fox
And to you I say thank you.
Thank you, sir, but no.
Sir, I’m sorry,
Dinner must wait.
We regret we cannot come
Into your little kitchen.
Now, my friends
The mission calls.
Let''s tell the news
To the king.
A bit of sky has fallen
On my little head.
Let''s tell the news,
The news to the king.
We''re off, friends!
Let''s go to the king.

THE POULTRY
Go on ahead, Chickie Little,
We won''t go now
To tell the king about the sky
That fell on your head.
Life is short.
We want to enjoy ourselves
Along the way to the king.
For now, we''ll eat:
A bite, a snack, a feast
In Mr. Red Fox''s kitchen.
Good-bye, Chickie Little,
Go onward to the king!

CHICKEN LITTLE
Good-bye, friends,
The mission calls me.
And so I regret that I cannot wait.
Life is short
And it waits for nothing.
I''ll go alone to tell the king.
Farewell, I go on alone.
Farewell, I must be going.
Farewell, farewell, farewell!

(LA PULCINA PICCOLA exits.)

MR. RED FOX
Farewell, Chickie.
Have a good trip! Bye!
Now, to the feast,
To the feast, my friends.
Go on ahead to
My little kitchen!

THE POULTRY
Let''s go on to
Your little kitchen
Life is short,
To the feast! To the feast!
Let''s go on to
Your little kitchen!

(MR. RED FOX exits dancing and the birds follow. He soon returns with his dinner on a tray.)

MR. RED FOX
Now, what shall I prepare?
Baked?
Stuffed?
Fried?
What''s this? Great idea...
Here is my dinner…
Jellied chicken salad.
With Goosey Loosey
And Ducky Lucky,
And Turkey Lurky And…
Mamma Mìa The Big Red Hen!
Bon apptit!

(Mr. Red Fox exits. Sometime later, after her visit to the king, La Pulcina returns home. She soon moves to the Big City where she meets Brawler, the brawny cockfighter.)

06 – Amore cos''è questo

LA PULCINA PICCOLA
Amore, cos''è questo?
Oh, amore, cos''è?
Un gallo combattente,
Forte e grosso.
Serai il mio amore soprattutto
Balleremo fino alla fine del tempo
E´ sempre il primo,
Sempre è nuovo
E´ sempre per sempre,
E sei sempre tu.

__________

CHICKEN LITTLE
What is love?
Oh, lover, what is it?
A cockfighter,
Brawny and thick,
You will be my love Above all.
We''ll dance ''Til the end of time.
It''s always the first;
It''s always new
It''s always forever
And it''s always you.

(Their passion burns too brightly to endure. La Pulcina consoles herself with a career on the stage, and, later, a career in politics. Her supporters rally.)

07 – Candidata peso piuma

GENTE
La Pulcina
La Pulcina Piccola
Candidata
Candidata peso piuma
Ci conduce
Dalla crisi
Dalla crisi alla storia.

LA PULCINA PICCOLA
Ho una missione.
Un voto per me -- è un voto per... me!

__________

CROWD
Chickie Little
The featherweight Candidate
Leads us from the crisis into history.

CHICKEN LITTLE
I have a mission!
A vote for me is a vote for... me!

(Triumph follows triumph. At last she meets Cock Robin. This is the affair to remember. This is her match made in heaven.)

08 –

LA PULCINA PICCOLA
Amore, cos''è questo?
O, amore cos''è?
Un pilota elegante
Vivace e libero
Questo è l''amore altissimo
È l''amore del paradiso.
È sempre il primo

LE DUE
È sempre nuovo
È sempre per sempre
E sei sempre tu

CHICKEN LITTLE
What is love?
Oh, lover, what is it?
A dashing flyer,
Lively and free,
This is the highest love
It is the love of paradise.
It''s always the first;

PULCINA & COCK ROBIN
It''s always new
It''s always forever
And it''s always you

(Cock Robin is shot dead by an arrow.)

09 – Chi l''ha fatto?
LA PULCINA PICCOLA
Chi l''ha fatto? Chi l''ha fatto?
Chi ha fatto questo atto malfatto?
Strappato dal mi cuore Il gallopettirosso
Dipartito da questa vita.
Chi puó spiegarlo? Chi puó spiegarlo?
Chi puó spiegar questa grand'' perfidia?
Adesso con un bacino
Arrivederci, amore mio
Adesso il suo spirito
Vive solo nel mi cuore
Dove vado?
Come continuo, cuore mio?
Coraggio, pulcinina, C''è al meno una ragione per vivere:
Giustizia!
Giustizia!
Vendetta!!

__________

CHICKEN LITTLE
Who has done this? Who has done this?
Who has done this evil deed?
Wrenched from my heart,
Cock Tobin is lost to this life.
Who can explain it? Who can explain it?
Who can explain this great wickedness?
Now with one little kiss,
I bid you farewell, my love.
Now your spirit lives only in my soul.
Where shall I go?
How do I continue, my heart?
Courage, Chickie Little,
There is still one reason to live:
Justice!
Justice!
Revenge!!

(In her sorrow, La Pulcina retreated far from society to a tiny island in the South Seas. Yet, even there she finds no solace. She takes to the sea to calm her troubled soul.)

10 – Sul mare tranquillo

Sul mare tranquillo

LA PULCINA PICCOLA
E vero che un pollo
Non nuota nè vola
Cosí com'' il cielo
Il mare mi chiama
La pace qui troveró
Sul mare tranquillo
Qua troverò la via,
La via della calma
E pace, pace d''animo
Pace, pace d''animo.
Ahimè!
Il mare fa grosso
È fa oscuro il cielo!
Sono nei pasticci,
Questo pollo tenero.
Il tuono! Il lampo!
Mi sommerge l'' onda!
Bouna fortuna!
Non mi abbandonar!

(Her boat sinks during the storm. La Pulcina survives.)

Che un pollo non nuota
Nè vola è vero
Gli sono negati
Anche il mare ed il cielo
Non troveró rifugio
Sulle onde tempestose
Dal tempo ne dall''affanno
Cerco porto sicuro e
Pace, pace d''animo
Pace, pace d''animo

Nave in vista! Sono salva!
(The pirate ship sales closer)
Oh…No! Che timor!

__________

CHICKEN LITTLE
It is true that a chicken
Neither swims nor flies,
But the sea calls to me
As surely as the sky.
Here upon the tranquil sea
I will find serenity --
Here will I find my way
To composure and
Peace of mind.
Alas!
The sea is getting rough!
And the sky is growing dark!
This is a fine stew
For a tender chicken!
The thunder! The lightning!
The wave overwhelms me! Pray this ain''t the time for
Luck to forsake me!

(Her boat sinks during the storm. La Pulcina survives.)

Truly, a chicken
Neither swims nor flies --
Both the sea and the sky
To the chicken are denied
I will not find refuge
Upon the stormy waves
From weather
Nor from sorrow.
I must seek safe harbor and
Peace of mind.

Sail ho! I am saved!
(The pirate ship sales closer)
Oh… No! What dread!!

(Aboard the pirate ship, the crew sings.)

(When at last it is time for them to part, she travels to the American Southwest, where she finds herself alone, far out on the prairie.)

12 – Così com'' un sogno vivido

LA PULCINA PICCOLA
Così com'' un sogno vivido
Perduto su risveglio
Così com'' un eco distante
La domanda
Come sono arrivato qua?

Sono venuta ruzzolando
Nel vento o a cantare
Alla serata nel deserto
Alla luna, la luna che cresce

Forse qui dov'' al''orizzonte
Le strade scompaiono
E la terra,
La terra è fertile coi sogni
Sentiró la risposta qua

Sono venuta ruzzolando
Nel vento o a cantare
Alla serata nel deserto
Alla luna, la luna che cresce

Vengo a trovare I sogni perduti
E sento gli echi fortissimi
Io viaggio oltre la domanda
La domanda
E sento le risposte qui
Sento le risposte qui

__________

CHICKEN LITTLE
Like a vivid dream

Lost upon waking
Like an distant echo unclear
The question returns
But no answer
How did I come to be here?

Did I come to tumble in the wind
Along a dusty river bed
Or to sing my song
To the waxing moon
As the evening shadows spread?

Maybe here in this barren place

Where the roads disappear
At the edge of space
Where the land is fertile
With dreams
Maybe here I will

Hear the answer

Did I come here to tumble
In the wind
Along a dusty river bed
Or to sing my song
To the waxing moon
As the evening shadows spread?

I''ve come to find the dreams I lost
To hear the echoes loud and clear
To travel beyond the question

And to hear the answer here

(The cowboy enters.)

13 – Amo la prateria

IL COWBOY
La prateria mi piace molto
Nella prateria io erro
Voglio vivere qua alla macchia
Sono un cowboy solo

Non devo nulla-
Nulla per niente
Non sto in posto a lungo
Mentre io passo
Questa cittá
Mi riposo qua un po''
E io canto
Oooo

La prateria
E la mia terra
Io dormo
Sotto il cielo
La salvia e
Il mio mangiare
E bevo dal
Fiume profondo

Io guardo alle
Stelle della notte
Voglio e
Bramo trovare
Una pulcina
Che andrà con me
E canterà
Le mie canzoni
Oooo!
_________

COWBOY
I do love the prairie
The prairie''s where I roam
I am a lonesome cowboy
The prairie''s where
I make my home

I owe nobody nothin''
I never stay in one place long
While passing through
This prairie town
I''ll stop a while
And sing this song

The prairie

It is home to me.
I sleep under
The prairie sky.
Sage brush feeds
My body and soul.
Deep rivers quench me
When I’m dry.

Gazing up at the
Stars at night
I wish I may and
I wish I might
Find a chick
Who''ll come along
And ride the trails
As I sing my song
Oooo!

(The cowboy exits. As the moon rises, La Pulcina sings.)

14 – Il chiaro di luna

LA PULCINA PICCOLA
Il chiaro di luna
illumina
I solitari
E gli amanti
Sono lontana
Dalla cittadina
E spero di risanar

Era l'' amor
d''un cowboy
Mi ha chiamato
al west dorato
Ma il mio cuore
non trova riposo
Nell ''amore
di quel bel cowboy

Luna di miele
Luna di vino
Ti chiedo
Dammi un segno
Vado o rimango?
Rido o piango?
La luna non mi risponde

Era allo spartiaque
Era dove
Le acque sidividono
Dove l''ovino sta diritto
Ha rubato il mio cuor

Luna di miele
Luna di vino
Ti chiedo
Dammi un segno
Cala e cresce
La mia fortuna
In amore cosi
Com''la luna

E l''ama più di me
E il mio cuore
È suo prigioniero
Ma il suo cuore è libero.
__________

CHICKEN LITTLE
The prairie moon
Is shining down
On the lonely
And the lovers.
I''m on the prairie
Far from town
Hoping to recover

It was the love
Of a cowboy
That called me
To the golden west
And the love of that
Handsome cowboy
Gives my heart no rest

Moon of honey
Moon of wine
Here on the prairie
Show me a sign
Do I stay or go?
Do I laugh or cry?
The prairie moon
Does not reply

It was at
The great divide
It was where
The waters part
Where an egg
Can stand on end,
That''s where
He stole my heart.

Moon of honey
Moon of wine
Here on the prairie
Show me a sign
My luck in life and
My luck in love
Wax and wane
Like the moon above

My cowboy loves
The prairie
More than
He loves me
And he holds
My heart captive
While his heart must be free

La Pulcina returns home where she lives out her days. The closthespin company assembles for a séance lead by Chicken Medium, the great seer and spiritualist.

CHICKEN MEDIUM

ALL
Chicken Little''s memory
Is engraved forever
On the hearts
And minds of everyone

(The company exits. La Pulcina’s spirit reappears on the wings of a kiss. She bids the company farewell as she ascends to heaven.)

16 – Sono una pulcina

LA PULCINA PICCOLA
Sono una pulcina
E non muoio d''amore
Il mio cuore è cosi pieno
Com''è l''uovo dove sono nata
E adesso, per il finale,
Affettuosamente
V I dico addio amici
E ascendo all'' amore divino

CHICKEN LITTLE
I am a young chick
And I’m not dying for love.
My heart is as full
As the egg from which I was born.
And now, for the finale,
Affectionately,
I say good-bye, my friends,
And I depart for the divine.

Together they created the score for the landmark 1981 Broadway musical Dreamgirls, which received six Tony Awards. Mr. Krieger won a Tony nomination for his score to Dreamgirls, as well as the 1982 Grammy Award for Best Original Cast Album. Two years later, his musical The Tap Dance Kid opened on Broadway, earning a pair of Tony Awards. He collaborated with Bill Russell on the Broadway musical Side Show (1997, for which he earned another Tony Award nomination for Best Score) and the regional musicals, Everything''s Ducky (2000; revised as Lucky Duck in 2004), and Kept (2002), a modern re-telling of the Camille story. Krieger and Russell also wrote “Santa''s Gonna Rock And Roll,” the opening number of the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular for over a decade, and they were also commissioned to write “Take The Flame,” for the opening and closing ceremonies of Gay Games IV. With lyricist Susan Birkenhead, he recently contributed two songs to Hats!, the musical revue of the Red Hat Society. Upcoming projects for Henry Krieger include Broadway musical versions of the films The Flamingo Kid, Fried Green Tomatoes, and Moonstruck. In 2006, Dreamgirls was made into a major feature film, with songs by Henry Krieger, Tom Eyen and others.
